China intends to sign a new contract on delivery of 120 AL-31FN engines

Wednesday October 26, 2011

China intends to sign a new contract on delivery of 120 AL-31FN bypass turbofan engines for J-10 multi-role fighters, VPK reports.

Such information is contained in the 3P French military technical ballot (Polemos, Pater, Panton) of International relations and strategy institute. Possibly this refers to AL-31FN bypass turbofan engines with undermouth propulsion unit gearbox and adjustable jet nozzle. The engine has a maximum thrust of 12 500 kg and intended for J-10 fighters.

As reported by CEO of Rosoboronexport, Anatoly Isaikin, Russia has signed first contract with China on delivery of 122 AL-31FN engines for J-10s in 2009. In case of signing another contract, it will be the second one related to AL-31FN engines for Chinese fighters.

The contract on manufacturing 120 AL-31FN engines will be implemented by Gas-turbine Engineering Research and Production Center Salut. Its ex-CEO Yuri Eliseev said that around 300 AL-31FN engines will be delivered to China in future. According to the French title, in case of signing the new contract, the total number of Russian engines delivered to China will reach 1000.

AL-31F family engines are intended for Su-27 and Su-30МКК fighters, sold to China during a period from 1990 to 2000. The first contract on delivery of 150 engines used for replacement of engines, which have outlived usefulness, has been signed by Rosoboronexport and performed by UMPO (Ufa Engine Industrial Association) and it ends in 2011. However, a contract on delivery of 180 instead of 150 AL-31F engines for replacement of old ones installed on Su-27 fighters of Chinese air forces is implemented by Salut in cooperation with UMPO at the ratio of 100:80.

This kind of news appears on the Russian jounal every two weeks since july, but in reality there is NO new AL-31FN contract signed and there is NO Russian engine contract signed in 2011.I don't know why the Russians want to cook it again and again. And the FWS-10 serie production goes well, the different variants-FWS-10A and FWS-10B were delivered to the J-11 and J-10 under the plan. Also the FWS-13A is in small batch production in this year and the 9500kgf FWS-13B is tested for the certification.Maybe the Russians need to learn that to cellebrate something after it's set down.

China would be a fool to re-engine all the J-11As and J-10s with WS-10s if the cost was much greater than the replacement cost ofthe Russian engines. The 2 mentioned aircraft are approaching 10 year service life. I see no problems in buying russian replacement engines to keep WS-10 production quality at high standards rather than rushing production for the sake of having all jets using domestic engines.

only a russian report
i only believe our chinese sources and i dont believe any russian infs
according to chinese forum,This new contract of AL31FN TVC version arent still signed now.
WS10B have much bigger thrust and much longer lifetime than AL31FN, WS10B is up to the production demands and will be put into mass production soon.
btw, also i personally think China will not choose AL31FN TVC version ,bcz China have own WS10 TVC version.maybe china will buy some ordinary AL31FNs due to capacity.

Weapon and Technology: China Purchases 123 AL-31FN Fighter Jet Engines
China has signed an agreement purchase 123 Russian Lyulka-Saturn AL-31FN turbofan engine to continue the production of the J-10 Fighter Jets.China will take the delivery of first 13 before the end of this year while remaining 110 AL-31FN engines by 2013. Total deal is worth $500 million.

Chinese J-10 fighter jet is powered by the Russian Lyulka-Saturn AL-31FN turbofan engines. This new order has been placed due to the difficulties in mass production of the WS-10A (WoShan-10A) turbofan engines and increased priority of WS-10A turbofan engines for the J-11B fighter jets.

Report from September
China may buy Russian jet engines
China may buy Russian jet engines
After media reports suggested that China had reached an agreement to buy more than 100 Russian fighter jet engines, Russian plane engine manufacturer SALUT told the Global Times on Wednesday that Beijing had not ratified the deal."The contract will involve 140 to 150 engines, but it has not been confirmed by authorities in Beijing," Alexander A. Drozhzhin, the head of press for SALUT, told the Global Times at the Aviation Expo in Beijing on Wednesday.

The Russian state arms exporter, Rosoboronexport (ROE), announced in July a sale of 123 SALUT-made AL-31FN turbofan engines to China for $500 million, the Washington Times reported late August.

The engine is a variant of that used in the Su-27 and Su-30MKK/MK2 fighter jets and is designed to be used on China's single-engine J-10 aircraft, the paper added.

According to Drozhzhin, the reported deal involves the third series of the AL-31FN, which have a maximum thrust of 12,500 kilograms and 2,000-hour service life.

The AL-31FNs currently used on China's J-10s have 11,700-kilogram thrust and 1,500-hour service life, Drozhzhin told the Global Times.

China's air force development made headlines earlier this year after news about the prototype J-20 stealth plane emerged. However, aircraft engine design and manufacture have been lagging behind.

Since 2009, home-made Taihang engines, developed and produced by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), have been fitted to the double engine J-11 fighter jets, its J-15 carrier-based variant and an upgraded version of the J-10 single engine fighter.

Lin Zuoming, president of AVIC, told the Global Times in a previous interview that it had taken 20 years to develop the Taihang, and that work on the engine was progressing very well.

When asked if Chinese engines such as the Taihang would have any impact on the export of Russian engines, Drozhzhin said that SALUT was confident in the future sale prospects of their product.

"The Taihang's appearance on the J-15 meant its reliability and performance had met with high demands, such as those for carrier-based aircraft. That was a significant boost for China's flight engine development," Daniel Tong, Chinese aviation observer and founder of the website Chinese Military Aviation, told the Global Times.
