China & India target 'fair, reasonable' border solution

China & India Tuesday agreed to seek a "fair and reasonable" solution to disputes over their long Himalayan border, Chinese foreign ministry said.

The joint commitment to resolve their border disputes followed talks in Beijing led by Chinese State Councillor Dai Bingguo and Indian National Security Adviser (NSA) Shivshankar Menon, the ministry said.

Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said earlier on Tuesday that China was "committed to resolving the border question through frank consultations with India".

"It is willing to make joint efforts with India to maintain peace and stability on the border," Hong said.

India and China established a joint working group in 1988 to find a solution to the border disagreements. They still dispute large areas along their 4,000-km border after a brief war fought in the Himalayas in 1962.

They have held 14 rounds of talks since they appointed special representatives in 2003 to explore solutions to the disputes.

China occupies part of the disputed Jammu and Kashmir region. India accuses Pakistan of illegally ceding it to Beijing.

India alleges that China illegally occupies 43,000 square km of land in Kashmir, while China has laid claim to large parts of the Indian states of Arunachal Pradesh. It earlier also claimed Sikkim.

But booming two-way trade and increased dialogue between the countries has significantly improved bilateral relations in recent years.

During then Indian prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's visit to China in June 2003, India said it recognised the Tibet region as an autonomous part of China and Beijing recognised Sikkim as part of India.

if they started it in 2003, then its highly likely that they might have resolved now.
Hope asian elephant and dragon moves ahead and we can hear some wonderful outcome of the talks.

I still don't understand what's the big deal..neither of the countries can afford a war to capture claimed territories..then why not accept the ALOC and move forward..is it because india afraid of accepting the ALOC or is it because china wants some more parts from indian side india not ready to give..?

This issue is not going to b resolved,India is not going to compromise over Arunachal and China not on Aksai Chin, the only possible solution is accepting LAC as the border

^^ india still refuses full on negotiation they only agree to talks which gets basically nothing done

As long as it's over. In all honesty, I think India is better off alone, having to fend of a lion opposite of the border rather than taking on a dragon and a lion. Though India could have shown a little more compassion, it seems in this dispute, China is the only one showing a little more optimism, even if it's a small spec of it.

well delay tactics so indian can prepare a classic back stab and ambush..i hope the Chinese are smart enough!

This is confusing and seems to be inaccurate.

India has been asking for talks as far as I know, as far as is public information, including information submitted to Parliament by ministers responsible. There is constant evidence that the Ministry of External Affairs is prepared to discuss the entire border and the disputed sections in particular.

Could you please explain why you believe that full negotiations are not being undertaken, or what information leads you to believe that?

Also, what piece of information or expert analysis has given rise to your impression that India agrees to talks that basically get nothing done?

My request is for information that either bears out this pessimistic view, or information that clearly shows that there is a limited perspective.
