This gap is bound to increase in 2-3 years, but this is not sustainable.

If China doesn't open its market for pharmaceuticals, IT, etc then China will be blamed for down trend in trade. As far as China is exporting cheaper capital goods then it is not an issue for us.

.
The thing, india has very few to offer china....
Being a resources export country, india can be easily replaced by many resources-rich countries like Australia, Brazil and many countries in Africa.
We have Huawei, OPPO, Xiaomi, One Plus, why should we need theirs?

In another thread, an Indian forum member said that the Chinese cannot afford high quality products. Maybe you guys should lower your prices or devalue the rupee so that Chinese as well as us Europeans can afford to buy your top notch products.

I guess India will bring down the total trade with China to correct the trade imbalance.

I can understand high end electronics import from China. Until unless India does not start Electronics manufacturing in high scale is bound to lose dollars.
Second is China's refusal to open up IT and Pharmatical sectors, which is India's major strength. But even if China opens it trade is not going to shoot up 20B in overnight. It takes some time. However anti dumping should be enforced on handicraft items and non essential like firecrackers, plastic toys, headsets, chargers etc. It wont save much forex money, but its essential to prevent more lose of money in future.

A very High IQ response from a very High IQ member

I think you people are looking it the wrong way.

If we want to integrate into the Asian Supply Chain, by taking production leaving China, our trade deficit with China will only increase, not decrease.

It can't be escaped or wished away, that China is a manufacturing giant, and has much to offer.

What we must instead focus on is to level our overall trade balance. That is our overall trade must be balanced. It doesn't matter if it is under great deficit with China, so far as the total trade is in surplus.

For example, China runs a huge deficit with South Korea and Taiwan in trade. Does that mean that somehow Korea/Taiwan are "winning" over CHina in trade?

I would say no.

Korean and Taiwanese production and products are central components in China's electronics industry, which is the single largest export product of the Chinese. This means that Korean memory chips, and Taiwanese electronic supplies enable China to make complete laptops etc. which they export.

Similarly, in the other direction, China runs a deficit with Australia. Does that mean that China is loosing in its trade with Australia? Again no. Because Australia provides raw materials to the Chinese to enable them to set up their manufacturing base.

TRADE is not a zero sum game.

What Indian IT can offer China when our IT sector is bigger than yours?
In terms of pharmacy, we are open to all big multinationals who hold patents. Patents are a issue for Indians.

Anti-Dumping has some rules and regulations. It can't be put randomly on any thing. As far as I know, plastic toys, headsets, and chargers are not being dumped by China in India.

India needs to step up manufacturing in places where it can be done immediately.

For example, fertilizer.

For the love of God, I have never been able to understand why India imports Urea from China. Urea! Such a basic thing.

A lot of low end manufacturing can be done in India with the right incentives and conditions, but some like capital goods will have to be imported from China nonetheless.

Let's not talk about IT, but as far as pharma is concerned, India leads in one category of pharma called generics and specialty generics.

These are drugs whose patents have expired, and who no longer need patents.

We are pretty competitive in this sector, with exports to Europe and US doing well.

The problem with China is that China also wants to capture this area, and is being protective. It is not giving Indian companies necessary quality clearances.

The shame is that the same companies, facilities approved and checked by the Americans and Europeans have not been given quality clearances by Chinese.

That's the thing buddy. "Opening" up of sectors. There are no Chinese companies serving worldwide to the likes of Info, Wipro or TCS. Most of the IT contracts in China are made for Chinese IT companies. Contracts are not given for Foreign companies. A state company puts up an tender means it is open to all, but its given to Chinese companies is the complaint best heard.

Patents? Does China respects foreign Patents? Now dont tell me China respects Patents of foreign company. Secondly we supply cheap generic drugs to the whole world. Again foreign companies in China are discouraged. Opaque systems.

Anti-dumping can be imposed on things where there are local make available and there the import is not competitive. More importantly can be used for protecting traditional cottage industries such as firecrackers. We know we do make basic headsets. We need to behave like China in some aspects. Start with small non essential things. Like those.

We cannot stop importing laptops and desktops from them. They are exporting to the whole world. However slowly and steadily we can grow up on it. We need a start.

Friend (can I call you this?) , on the trade loophole, I think the fundamental reason is that the industrial structure of the two countries is different, can not completely rely on the behavior of the state to rectify. Now India is to upgrade the second industry, So the final solution to the problem is still in need of time.

Do you know the "Industry 4.0"?

Because Taiwan is a part of China, Taiwan's electronics companies have almost built factories in mainland China.
