On the topic:
The Chinese are trying to overcome geography, which favours us. How many Indian ships pass through their backyard? We may have a late start, but we got the biggest trump cards of them all.

What encirclement are we talking about: Pakistan (our forces have been ready for a two-front war since ages; Pakistan is beset with its own long-term problems), Bangladesh (they are more bothered with radical Islam than anything else; the largest parties therein are pro-India), Nepal (the commies there are not exactly "popular;" wait till the next elections before passing a judgement), Myanmar (there are plenty of Myanmar’s generals who are pro-India and anti-China because they feel that Myanmar is becoming a Chinese pawn), Sri Lanka (they know very well that if they want peace they ought to toe our line; we hate the LTTE as much as they do; the IN is pretty active therein), Africa (the Chinese do have a lead here but we do have plenty of friends there), South-East Asia (the SEA nations fear, and not respect, China).

It is high time we stop overplaying the Chinese; they have a long way to go. The commercial inroads that you are seeing are necessary for them to maintain their growth. The Chinese growth is more resource-based than ours. Militarily, both countries are at par.

I must feel frustrated because China already has such missiles for years but India is still at large.

These countries should also co ordinate their trade within themselves only

China has a close military tie with Pakistan, but I don't think it advisable to extend this tie outward to above neighbouring countries. instead, strengthened economic and cultural ties is a better way.
