This is a project that is much more interesting than just swarming Taiwan with military aircraft and ships. It is an engineering challenge as difficult as going to moon but will bring many benefits. With the technology developed in connecting far off islands, one day, it may be possible to extend this to Japan and build similar crossings to Indonesia, Philippines and eventually to Australia and New Zealand. And may be in 22nd century build it to North America.

Better yet, do land reclamation all the way to the island, sealing off the strait completely.
