China GDP will be 300% bigger than USA in 2040

China is growing roughly at 10%/year while US grows at 3%/year. At this rate, China closes the gap by $180 billion/year.

At this rate, it will take China about 45 years to even match US at GDP.

Can China continue to grow at 10% / year forever?

It seems that some younger Chinese members have been hanging around Indian members for too long and have adopted Indian style bragging.

Unfortunately yes. It is very disappointing.

I can't believe that anyone could fall for something so ridiculous and stupid.

And look at the source. Foreign Policy magazine. What they are trying to do is obvious, they want us to fail by making us arrogant and complacent before we have even become a developed economy.

Wrong calculation. You need to use "nominal GDP growth" to calculate increases in nominal GDP.

For example, China's GDP in 2010 was 5.8 trillion, in 2011 it was 7.3 trillion. (Source: IMF).

Due to inflation, changes in money flow, exchange rates, etc. which are removed from real GDP growth rates.

The article is BS but your math is horrible, you cannot use an even difference from this year to calculate catchup. Starting with both $1, in 28 years (2040), if China maintains 10% and US 3%, by 2040,

China: 1.1^28 = 14.42
US: 1.03 ^ 28 = 2.29

Since US is now 3 times bigger, it is indeed China's economy will be 400% of US. Of course, economy is not math.

Sorry Mate.. You are wrong too :lol:
China = 1*1.1^28 = 14.42
USA = 3*1.03^28 = 6.86

China/USA = 2.1 or 210%

Your math is horrible too :D

Wrong AGAIN. :rofl:

According to IMF data for 2011, China's economy is 7.3 trillion and the USA's economy is 15 trillion. Which is a difference of two times (specifically 2.05 times), not three.

Therefore, your post below is ENTIRELY wrong. Ironic, considering you were making fun of someone else for that same reason.

Also, you're supposed to use nominal GDP growth (not real GDP growth) to calculate increases in nominal GDP.

As I said before, IMF shows China's economy was 5.8 trillion in 2010, and 7.3 trillion in 2011. That increase is obviously a LOT more than the real GDP growth rate (which was 9.2% that year).

So let's not insult each others math skills. Especially if you get it wrong too.

unless the article can convince us that China's double digit % growth has taken into account of cyclical adjustments as it will happen every 10 to 20 years, the growth story is too good to be true.

You failed in arithmetic.
