China 'extremely embarrassed' by N. Korea's nuclear test

Senior Chinese foreign ministry officials were "extremely embarrassed" by North Korea's fourth nuclear test, a South Korean diplomatic source who spoke with the Chinese officials said Monday, in an indication that Beijing itself has only limited access to deduce what is going on inside the isolated ally.

North Korea claimed it successfully detonated a hydrogen bomb last Wednesday with leader Kim Jong-un saying on Sunday that the claimed fourth nuclear test was a self-defensive measure against what he calls a threat of nuclear war from the United States.

Senior officials at China's foreign ministry had not expected North Korea to carry out the nuclear test because Kim made no mention of nuclear ambitions in his New Year's address.

The North's latest nuclear test flew in the face of overtures by China to improve bilateral ties that have been strained for years over Pyongyang's third nuclear test in February 2013.

Since Liu Yunshan, the Chinese Communist Party's fifth-ranked official, visited Pyongyang last October and held talks with Kim, there had been signs of improvement in bilateral ties between the allies.

Citing private discussions with senior officials at China's foreign ministry on the day when North Korea announced the fourth nuclear test, the source said they were "extremely embarrassed because nobody expected the nuclear test to take place."

A senior Chinese official told the source, "We have been so naive in trying to anticipate what will happen in North Korea."

South Korean Ambassador to China Kim Jang-soo will hold talks with China's chief nuclear envoy, Wu Dawei, on Monday evening in Beijing, the source said, adding that the meeting had been scheduled before the North's nuclear test.

"Of course, the top agenda of today's meeting will be North Korea's nuclear test," the source said.

While South Korea, the United States and Japan have called for China to put more pressure on North Korea after the fourth nuclear test, Beijing's response was lukewarm.

Many analysts believe that China's Communist Party leadership won't put enough pressure on North Korea to give up its nuclear ambitions because a sudden collapse of the North's regime could threaten China's own security interests.

It is the South Korea who is extremely embarrassed. North Korea uses Nuclear Programs to prove that it is an independent country while South Korea is a puppy state. South Korea can beat North Korea on anything except independence, which Koreans had been dreaming for nearly 2000 years.

On issue of independence, i suppose its best to say that the issue of Korean national unification, has yet to be achieved. It is, indeed, unfair that since 1905, Korea had not been a unified singular state. That said, i hope that someday the nation can be unified. But the question is this: How can Pyongyang and Seoul be unified?

But the truth is that North Korea is an insane rogue state that is in the process of aiming thermonuclear weapons at the USA. Nothing to do with us.

If they really were our puppet state, they would let in all our companies to develop their infrastructure and economy, like we've been asking to do for a decade. Not ruin our economic development by nuking several of our largest trading partners.

I think it is the US that should be feeling the embarrassment. With all the superior political and military power we have, there is nothing we can to to force this US designated " Rogue Nation" to submit.

lol, you failed to see the usefulness of North Korea to the US.

Keeping North Korea in tow will basically keep South Korean in line, and NK would also be depending on China to survive and basically it is a win-win situation for US to keep NK at play.

On one hand, it will have a stanch reminder to the South Korean that the Northern Threat is pretty much exist, and make the South to rely on US weapon. On the other hand it keep on dragging Chinese support to prop up the Northern Regime, which further the NK goes, the further it get to be a Chinese Baggage.

I see no advantage to eliminate North Korea from the planet, in fact, if US.UN win the Korean war, they (the South Korean) would highly probable ditched the US (Because of the US support in Japan) and in Chinese camp right now. Geopolitically speaking, a divided Korea is basically the best thing it would get for the American.

If US only wanted to divide Korea in half, over 50 thousands allies soldier wouldn't died after allies troops pushed further into China border then got pushed back by the Chinese in Korean War.

Truman was "AGAINST" pushing thru the 38 parallel, and he is basically the only one who see the value of a divided Korea, the problem is, not a single person share his thought. MacArthur wanted pay back and believe it or not, China was a non-factor within the US military decision making during that stage of Korean War. The problem is that China did roll out her support in North Korea and by now, many within the congress share Truman view. Which lead to sacking of Douglas MacArthur and a Status Quo policy.

Firing MacArthur and refused to escalate the Korean basically doomed Truman Presidency. But this is indeed the right way to do as we all know now by defeating North Korea, there will be no place for US in the unified Korea, and the American would have to choose between Korea or Japan, which will ultimate leads to US support unilaterally with Japan and in turn force Korea into Chinese Camp. By winning the War in Korea, China will have the whole Korea Peninsula as buffer instead of just the northern part.
