China completed world's most powerful ultra-violet free-electron laser facility

Sept. 24, Dalian, China -- Dalian Coherent Light Source (DCLS), world's most powerful ultra-violet free-electron laser facility, today emits its first ultra-violet electron beam.

Financed by the China central government and developed by CAS (Chinese Academy of Science), DCLS is designed to emit 50nm to 150nm ultra-violet electron beam. E-beam in this range is an effective tool to help scientists observe and understand the behavior of microcosmic particle.

大连相干光源首次出光

  9月24日,由国家自然科学基金委资助的基于可调极紫外相干光源的综合实验装置的主体——大连相干光源的安装工程全部完成。当天,在经过相关专家严格的系统安装工程验收之后,项目专家在晚上21点30分钟开始了自由电子激光放大器出光调试,整个调试过程非常顺利,22点50分,超过300兆伏能量的高品质电子束流终于依次通过自由电子激光放大器的全部元件,总长18米的波荡器阵列发出了第一束极紫外光。

  大连相干光源是当今世界上唯一工作在极紫外波段的自由电子激光用户装置,也是我国第一台自由电子激光大科学用户装置。在完成调试之后,这一装置将产生世界上最强的极紫外光束。光源的每一个激光脉冲可以发出超过10万亿个光子,波长可在50nm到150nm之间连续可调,具有完全的相干性,脉冲长度可以在飞秒和皮秒模式之间选择。这一光源在化学、物理、生物、能源、材料、环境等重要科学领域有着极为广泛的应用。

  大连相干光源由国家自然科学基金委国家重大仪器专项资助,由中国科学院大连化学物理研究所和中国科学院上海应用物理研究所联合研制,项目于2012年初正式启动,2014年10月22日正式开工建设。正式开工以来,在不到两年的时间里完成了主要基建工程和主体光源装置的研制并实现首次出光,创造了同类大型科学装置建设的新纪录。这一项目也开创了我国科学研究专家与大科学装置研制专家成功合作的先例。

  大连相干光源团队将在现有工作的基础上进一步密切合作,在近期内努力完成参数优化和光束线站的调试,争取尽快达到设计指标,为科学研究提供高质量的极紫外光源。

you can understand it as a "microscope" to observe the microcosmic particle.

For example, when we burn the coal, many many microcosmic particle will be emitted. To observe and understand the behavior of these microcosmic particle is key to enhance the coal combustion efficiency and shorten the pollutant emission. However, we can not use the normal light to observe these extremely-small particle, because the wave length of the normal light is even longer than these particle. Therefore we need a special facility to produce some special light to help us watch the small particle. Dalian Coherent Light Source (DCLS) is exactly built for such purpose.

DCLS is not the only super "microscope" in China. My hometown Shanghai has a similar one, but much larger in size: Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF) is a third-generation mediumenergy light source, consists of a 150-MeV electron linac, a full-energy booster, a 3.5-GeV electron storage ring, and 7 Phase-I beamlines and experimental stations.
