China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has lodged an official complaint to Japan after a politician claimed the Nanjing Massacre never occurred.

Nanjing has also suspended ties with its sister city Nagoya, whose mayor Takashi Kawamura made the remark.

According to the Asahi Shimbun paper, he said: "While there was general combat, I do not believe there was anything like the Nanking Incident."

Up to 300,000 people were killed in the massacre in the winter of 1937-1938.

The atrocity remains a sore point between the two countries. This year marks the 40th anniversary since they resumed diplomatic relations.

Mr Kawamura's comment was made to a delegation visiting Nagoya from Nanjing.

He said that his father had been stationed in Nanjing in 1945, and had been treated well by the Chinese residents.

Asahi reported that Mr Kawamura made similar comments in a meeting in September 2009.

Relations between China and Japan have been turbulent since the end of World War II, when Japanese occupation of parts of China came to an end.

The Nanjing Massacre has remained a sticking point in relations, along with land disputes and war reparations.

The number of people killed in the incident varies depending on the source, and has been put at anywhere up to 300,000.

I realy hate when people do not accept their mistake. when you do not accept your mistake you are never going to do what is correct so that you will not repeat your mistake.
A public appology by JAPAN would have sidelined all the differences that CHINA and JAPAN share now.

Animosity Ashok bhai can easily be diluted when an official apology is made . Doesn't take much to build bridges!

The BBC report is missing the point. Chinese people are angry at the Japanese mayor's remark, but the focus of anger is on the head of the official delegation from Nanjing for his lack of a response on the scene. Some Chinese internet sites allow posts on the issue while others do not. My comments saw the light of day very briefly. They disappeared within half an hour.

The Chinese delegates should walked out as soon as the remark was made. Some foul mouth politician deserved to be embarrassed on the spot. This message is louder than any complains that would log later on.

Vietnam will be dead soon.If they still play monkey business with China, we won't tolerate longer. Vietnam should be contained if they take Japan as their example.

Dont the British keep apologizing about what happened?

Japan should too....it just might catalyze some forward movement so tht people can get on with there lives.

at least japan should do what little it can to soothe things over.

this tragedy of the times can not be denied.

It's good the chinese officials must respose on that remark as you wish. What did you want the Japanese to say,did you prefer saying 'Japanese troops should killed as many Chinese as they could, the killed number is too little' by them?

Japanese were few of the reason why communist party came to power I guess. Usually suffering of people force people to take extreme steps. The democratic govern were too afraid of japs despite their army size.
I think he owes apology though. (I am half japanese) so I feel sorry for chinese , I admit it was barbaric if you know the history behind it.

Your acting cocky so I was forced to say this///
China does not have the balls to take taiwan. Taiwan is well small island compared to mainland china and population. Your navy is so scared that they are building so many ships but dont have the guts to take them out on patrol. You say you can take Japan but they are far superior than chinese in term of technology so please stop day dreaming and go back to your flat in New Jersey. A person who doesnt live in china saying such things is embarrassing and shameful as if they were patriotic they would have not left for US.
Japan is a weak country and China is conquering Japan bit-by-bit right now. PLAN has already kicked out Japanese coast guards from the disputed Diaoyutai Islands!

China expels Japanese survey boats - People's Daily Online

Just last month, China conquered Taiwan by intimidating the Taiwanese people into re-electing their pro-China president Ma Ying-jeou. Immediately afterwards this month, China attacked and drove out the Japanese from our Diaoyutai islands.

Soon, we will take back Okinawa, which was a Chinese vassal kingdom in the 19th century, and liberate its people from the US military bases there. Finally, from Okinawa, we will launch our amphibious attack on Tokyo Bay itself to finish off the Yamatos permanently.
