What's new

China commissions new-generation "artificial sun"

Please don't cry. China #1 :china: , the MIT reactor is cheap runs in the basement at MIT and only produce 500 MW. The US Navy and Lockheed Martin CFR have built small FR to power airplanes and ships forever....
Meanwhile China EAST is made by 7 countries it is massive weighs 23 TONS cost 36 billion $'s and needs acres of land. Of course China so stronk!!

MIT and CFS, and Lockheed Martin both have tokamaks under construction which will use this innovative technology in generating a stronger and smaller magnetic containment device, that is capable of suspending and holding the incredibly hot plasma necessary to generate fusion power.
The new superconductors generate a magnetic field so strong, that the size of the superconductors have been dramatically reduced to allow them to be portable.
For example, the proposed ITER tokamak will weigh 23,000 tons and have a diameter of 42 hectares.

The US is going with a different fusion design from MIT.
A prototype has been running inside MIT since 1993.

This design is expected to be much cheaper than ITER.

lol.. China #1, China make the brightest SUN.

international ITER project and China reactor is just a DEMO 😭 .
Bhai, don't try to be cute, you ain't, just QUOTE properly. US might have a miniature. Tokamak but the aim is to have the most powerful Tokamak. We need a German sherperd not a poodle. Lol.

And please don't bring your indic culture to US, may can will shall are all future tenses. Lol

Hand out all the negative ratings you want, haha

Only a lifetime bitch would do that
@PakSword @Horus

I don't this forumer deserve the title of PDF think tank analyst which gives it power to give rating. Clearly abusing it and first provoke members with insult and stupid stealing accusation. Check out earlier post and see what idiot reply she post.

This kind of so called "Think-tank Analyst" (dbc) only Downgrade the Quality of this forum

lol Chinese are unbelievable credit stealers.
It is an ITER project jointly built by seven nations.
The largest Tokamak reactor is being built in France.

The reactor design itself is Soviet.

Let the cursing and name calling commence in 9..8..7...

preview

yeah ..yeah..even the Sun is made in China lol
Yes, just like how China steal american 5G, right? Oh wait, American do not have 5G tech.

According to James Harrison, a fusion physicist at the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority, China’s HL-2M Tokamak differs from other devices because of its magnetic field’s flexibility. When the device is operating at high power, the scientists will be able to tailor it to protect its interior.

WOW this is the IQ of a PDF THINK TANK: ANALYST ?
He can't even tell the different between ITER from China domestic HL-2M Tokamak ...
No wander they support trump and believe in Flat EARTH

lmao so much salt from that ignorant toddler and usual stupid troll post spammer trying to steal credit from China with blatantly false information and bullshit rethoric doublestandards, no one in the industry actually adheres to, to denigrate Chinese he hates so much. Failing at basic reading comprehension to do a proper Google search on a topic he knows nothing about, before running off his mouth and polluting a thread about cutting edge fusion reactors with shere stupidity.

What an idiot.

This is is a proper reply to a troll post literally just making a racist insult, a factually false claim which is the entire justification for his post, a completely irrelevant point just trying to pile on the usual confused desi white superiority claims, a useless completely unsubstantiated opinion from an evidently ignorant biggot about the originality of a design he knows nothing about, projection of his constant insults and trolling, only to end it with more usless strawman rethoric.

Yes the Chinese reactor is funded by China but the components are made all over the world.
The Chinese Reactor (EAST) is IDENTICAL but smaller experimental version of the much larger reactor in France.

What a poor guy... This guy still don't realize we are talking about the new HL-2M Tokamak. Which a upgrade design and improvement base on the EAST test result.

MIT SPARC reactor target output = 1GW
HL-2M Target Output = 1GW

Looks like the Chinese reactor is an expensive poodle.
MIT SPARC <100m$ = 1GW
Chinese Reactor > 20 b$ = 1GW

These have all paved the way for the China Fusion Engineering Testing Reactor (CFETR), the preliminary conceptual design of which was finished in 2015 and engineering design started in 2017.
CFETR is intended for steady-state operation, as well as tritium self-sustainment. In phase one it should have 200MW fusion power and in phase two it should have power of 1GW.

Looks like I've massively triggered Chinese insecurities - oh joy! this is fun.

Stick and stones may break my bones ..but your words...

MIT SPARC does not have the problem that the Chinese reactor encounters with ‘quench’ when the performance of superconducting magnets deteriorate and cause resistance as the temperature rises.

The problem was solved by an MIT invention called VIPER a resistance - neutral superconducting cable.
The SPARC reactor is smaller because MIT was able to create a magnet an order of magnitude more powerful and much smaller than the magnets used at ITER.

A resistance-neutral superconducting cable that can conduct electricity with zero heat generation has been created by scientists at MIT. The technology could be a key element of realising fusion, the same process that powers the sun, long held as a theoretical source of Earthly energy needs.
Vacuum Pressure Impregnated, Insulated, Partially transposed, Extruded and Roll-formed (VIPER) could be the missing link between high-temperature superconductors (HTS) and the high-performance superconducting magnets which are central to controlling plasma reactions in fusion energy.
VIPER could be crucial to a future high-field fusion device such as the recently theorised SPARC, which would produce more energy than it consumes, something never previously demonstrated.
MIT assistant professor and principal investigator Zachary Hartwig said, "The cable technology for SPARC is an important piece of the puzzle as we work to accelerate the timeline of achieving fusion energy. If we're successful in what we're doing and in other technologies, fusion energy will start to make a difference in mitigating climate change—not in 100 years, but in 10 years."
The new cable technology could solve a problem fusion engineers call a ‘quench’ in which cables connecting superconducting magnets no longer operate without resistance.

“The key thing we can do with VIPER cable is make a magnetic field two to three times stronger at the size required than the present generation of superconducting magnet technology,” Hartwig says. The magnitude of the magnetic field in tokamaks plays a strong nonlinear role in determining plasma performance. For example, fusion power density scales as magnetic field to the fourth power: Doubling the field increases fusion power by 16 times or, conversely, the same fusion output power can be achieved in a device 16 times smaller by volume.

Sorry, you can claim all theory which never proves but fact is China HL-2M has reached the highest temp to prove its point. This is a feat which western still struggle. :enjoy:

.
What an astonishing achievement ! Chinese Scientists truly deserve Nobel prizes.
outdated technology
Waste of others people time and money
No difference to when Chinese fly to the moon because they hope can find gold there.

LOL is China's HL-2M a giant heater! You do realize the goal is to make electricity and not heat! You so funny!

Yes as a matter of fact the head of the Russian Nuclear institute called the ITER project obsolete. I can't find the interview will look for it.

Produce heat is the first step before producing electricity. The more heat you could generate the larger and more complex the generation system.

You are hopeless, Just pull some link from your rear and act as if u know. You dont even know producing heat is key to produced energy?
