China breaks India’s internet monopoly in Nepal

The Chinese side views its Nepal venture as part of a larger digital network of countries along the New Silk Road.
China on Friday became Nepal’s second internet service provider, breaking India’s monopoly in providing internet access to the Himalayan Kingdom.

The Hong Kong and Beijing based China Telecom Global (CTG) — a company formed in 2012 — has teamed up with Nepal Telecom to provide alternate cyber-connectivity to Nepal.

So far, Nepal had been linked to the global internet network through Indian telecom operators, using optical fiber connections in Biratnagar, Bhairahawa and Birgunj, among others.

But a new terrestrial fiber cable launched in 2016 by CTG will now connect Nepal and China through the Jilong (Rasuwagadhi) border gateway. Media reports in Nepal say that the new fiber link extends to

China’s Hong Kong Data Center — one of Asia’s largest global data centers.

Last month CTG paired with Daily-Tech, a developer and operator of data center infrastructure across China, and Global Switch, a leading data center in Europe, to launch a state-of-the art data center in Hong Kong.

The Chinese side views its Nepal venture as part of a larger digital network of countries along the New Silk Road.

“We want to build a grand corridor and a big platform for telecommunication. I’d call this an ‘information-centered high-speed link’ along the Belt and Road routes. This offers our company a great

opportunity. This opportunity also belongs to all of our partner companies participating in the Belt and Road Initiative. We can develop together,” says Deng Xiaofeng, CTG’s general manager, in an interview with the state-broadcaster China Global Television Network (CGTN).

Mr. Deng highlighted that following the Nepal project, CTG has expanded Internet services to Pakistan, Laos and Thailand.

China’s latest initiative is part of a larger effort to provide landlocked Nepal with additional physical and digital connectivity.

The Nepali website, Online Khabar is reporting that the new left alliance-led government, apparently well-disposed towards China, is keen to construct a 4.2 km road tunnel that will shorten travel time to two-and-a half hours from Kathmandu to Rasuwagadhi — the cross border point with China.

The website that the Nepali government has already approached the Beijing based Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) for support in funding the project.

Separately, China appears to be making efforts to build ties in the Nepal’s Terai plains area, where Indian influence is seemingly strong.

Xinhua is reporting that China is funneling humanitarian aid through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) that will benefit 31,800 household in the Terai region, which was hit by floods last

August. A post-flood assessment conducted by the government of Nepal found that 1.7 million people were affected by the disaster.

. . . . . . .
Now they have two, that means options.
yes, having an option is always better.
Really wish China also gets an option when electing government.

Because their stars all mostly fair and lovely muslims. Khans:lol:
Then you guys have an opportunity to break this monopoly also by using uyghurs who are muslims and also fair.
BTW, the movies of two Khans - Saif Ali Khan and Salman Khan are banned in Pakistan.

We like to have a government that is capable of bringing results, Indians chose to have people from the same family, father, daughter and grandson running your country for decades, it won't happen in China. General election may end up choosing idiot like Trump into the office, Chinese leaders have to prove themselves through decades of hardworking and achievements starting from grass root level, they were chosen based on merits and productivity, not on beautiful promises, so you Indians just speak for yourselves, not worries about our political systems.

I just said its good to have options in everything. Having an option makes one empowered. I don't want to get into the merit and demerit of the options.
Don't take my signature so literally.

Chinese always choose what suits us the best, and we are very result oriented and realistic, you may believe that you have a choice in your politics, but we all know you actually don't, don't be fooled by the cover and surface, result is everything the people need from a government.

It's good to have options but if all the options are crap, then what's the use? I rather stick with ONE option and that option delivers.

I think Pakistanis are typically very fair people, not all but majority. That's the reason they become famous actors, most have Central Asian blood.

Folks living under fake corrupted "democracy" telling others how to run its country.
You must be one of those folks who believed your opinion actually matter so are those poor indians living in india :)

8 Indian states = 25 African nations: Oxford study on poverty

There are 1.6 billion people living in multidimensional poverty across the world and nearly 440 million of them are in eight large Indian states, according to a new analysis using a unique index developed at the University of Oxford.

The eight Indian states that have similar number of poor as in 25 African countries are Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Odisha, Rajasthan and West Bengal. The poorest region in south Asia is Bihar, the analysis states.

In 2010, the Oxford analysis had concluded that there were more poor in India than in sub-Saharan Africa. Its 2014 analysis said the largest number of people classified as ‘destitute’ among developing countries was in India.

Sabina Alkire, director of the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative, told Hindustan Times on Thursday that the least poor Indian states according to the global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) in 2015 remained the same as in the 2010 analysis.

They are: Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Mizoram, Goa and Delhi.

The 2015 analysis is based on the last available data from India, Alkire said, and added that as per poverty estimation of seven south Asian countries, Afghanistan is the poorest, followed by India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan and Sri Lanka.

“Our measure of destitution, which identifies a subset of poor people as destitute if they experience a number of extreme deprivations like severe malnutrition, losing two children, having all primary-aged school children out of school, and using open defecation,” she said.

The destitution results for South Asia “are significant”, Alkire said. Afghanistan has the highest rate of destitution of 38%, followed by India at a “troubling” 28.5% (over 340 million people).

“But interestingly Bangladesh has much lower rate of destitution than either Nepal or Pakistan, showing that the country has alleviated the worst forms of deprivations,” she added.

“As the UN prepares to adopt 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) this September, which will determine the development agenda for the next 15 years, our findings serve as a powerful reminder of the extent of poverty reduction challenge ahead and the need for an energetic and coordinated response,” Alkire said.

The MPI is unique in capturing the simultaneous disadvantages experienced by poor people, such as malnutrition, education and sanitation, to provide a high-resolution lens on their lives. If people are deprived in one-third or more of ten (weighted) indicators, they are identified as MPI-poor.

They are fairer than average Indians because Indians worship white skin. To be fair, some East Asian do as well. But you need to times that by a factor of 1000 to understand Indian obsession with skin color.

India had been able to cut off Nepal internet access. They won’t be able to now. This prevent further Indian bullying like how they did to Nepal a while ago.
