China Box Office: 'Jurassic World' Grabs $100M As Blackout Looms - Hollywood Reporter - The Hollywood Reporter

Foreign films traditionally make way for Chinese films during June and July.
Jurassic World took in $100.1 million in its first five days in the world's second-biggest film market, according to data from Universal.

Hollywood is having a powerful run in China this year, with Furious 7, Avengers: Age of Ultron and now Jurassic World earning enormous sums in their opening weeks.

However, the annual "blackout" period is due to begin June 19, when Hollywood movies have to give way to Chinese films, and that usually runs until the end of July.

Ahead of the blackout comes The Divergent Series: Insurgent, then the focus is on domestic fare until later in July when Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Minions and Inside Out are expected, and Fantastic Four in August.

Among the big Chinese movies due to open in coming weeks are Hollywood Adventures and the latest installment in the Tiny Times franchise.

The Jurassic Park story seems to chime with audiences in China, especially in formats like Imax. The 3D rerelease of Jurassic Park in 2013 took $57 million, which was more than in North America. Figures from industry data group Entgroup revealed that Jurassic World had 344,103 showings and 15.73 million admissions.

The dinosaurs knocked Warner Bros.' and New Line's San Andreas into second place in the week to June 14, although it had a creditable week, taking $29.56 million. San Andreas had 229,121 screenings and 4.89 million admissions, according to Entgroup.

One of the things driving the popularity of the movie in China is the popularity of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, who came to Beijing to promote San Andreas and is loved for his role in Furious 7.

Also holding its own last week was Stand By Me Doraemon in third place, the first Japanese movie to show in China in nearly three years as tensions between the two Asian giants start to ease.

The chubby cat robot with a magical pocket added $8.31 million for a gross of $83.05 million after 18 days, Entgroup figures show.

Bollywood tentpole PK took another $2 million to bring its China cume to $18.77 million after 24 days, making it the most successful Indian film in China.

The success of Doraemon and PK shows growing sophistication in the Chinese market and offers hope to non-Hollywood movies that they also can make money in China.

In fifth place, Disney's superhero blockbuster Avengers: Age of Ultron added $1.53 million to its tally for a cume of $240.11 million.

Behind that came Disney's Tomorrowland, which took another $900,000 for a cume of $19.24 million after 20 days.

That was followed by Who Am I 2015, directed by Song Yinxi, which took $550,000 in its opening weekend, and Sun Hao's romantic comedy Zai Jian Wo Men De Shi Nian, with $480,000 in its opening weekend.

In ninth place was Monsters, which took another $290,000 for a gross of $740,000, and rounding out the top 10 in China was Happy Little Submarine Magic Box of Time, which took another $270,000 for a gross of $5.38 milllion.

The dinos from JP are fictional and fake, the real dinos are feathered and look closer to the birds than to the reptilians.

PS, now they use the pure CGI instead of the animatronics + CGI like they did in the past movies, so another huge watered down to the special effect.

During the movie, they did say that real dinosaur would look different. It is actually a specific plot point----the theme park want "attractions" instead of the real thing, hence the featherless dinosaur and genetically engineered Indominus Rex.

I am surprised that Age of Ultron is in second place. I have to admit that I didn't go see it personally, but there are a lot of people complaining "it isn't good". I guess it is one of the things that a minority of naysayers scream much more loudly than the majority.

Personally I think Jurassic World is great. I like it better than San Andreas.

Spoiler: The part where the paddock is opened and T-rex showed up is pure awesomeness.

Heard even the dubbed version of PK made close to $20 million, effectively making China the 2nd biggest market of Bollywood after India.

Asians have a disease - the disease of white worshipping.

A Chinese art film with good plot, maybe a few million dollars box office.

But man will Chinese pay out the nose to see shit like Avengers who are superheroes with no relation to Chinese culture whatosever. Then you have Koreans who PAID to have Avengers made there (usually the movie studio pays the locality).

In my defense, like every male human being (and some females as well) that is born after the invention of gunpower, large amount of explosion and gratuitous amount of violence attracts my attention----as long as it is done in good conscience.

I don't fault people for liking sassy love shows, but it is not my cup of tea.

They use it if something just doesn't look right.

For instance this is a real robot in the next Star Wars movie.

Should be interesting to see how a new Star Wars movie does in China.

The original just opened: The Original *Star Wars* Just Premiered in China | Vanity Fair

"...nearly 40 years ago, when the original Star Wars changed everything in the United States, Chinese moviegoers were nowhere near that galaxy far, far away. Which is how this week, Star Wars: A New Hope finally had its Chinese premiere."

Car chases and explosions are transnational. People, especially men, go to movies to escape, no matter how momentarily, the troubles of daily lives. But of course YOU have to make this a racial issue.

People watch movies that they identify with. Do you identify with white male superheroes? I sure as hell don't. What's worse is that it doesn't even have to be that way. There's no reason why Peter Parker can't be Peter Park; shit, Spiderman's stunt double is Korean, yet the face shown?

You don't seem to have a problem with Asian males being shit on by Hollywood and US media. Even Jet Li's kiss with Aaliyah got DELETED from Romeo Must Die. lolk. If that's not racism I don't know what is. And you tell me that Hollywood is neutral?

That was a film targeted towards mostly black audiences so don't blame "whitey" for an Asian/Black kiss being sent to the cutting room floor. If Romeo was a white guy it might even have had the same ending.

Yeah...And I watch X-rated movies because I identified with the guy with the big dick.

LMFAO.

That part killed me.

Dude, dude, dude...calm it down man. You sound like some of my friends who get angry at the sight of Asian girls holding hands with a whitey with yellow fever! What do you expect -- we live in a country that is immigrant-based. Its bound to happen , and whitey happens to make up the majority of the demographics, lol. Considering the fact that what ? East Asians make up less than 5% of the US Population, there's still a lot of representation in hollywood as of late.

I mean, definitely they need to stop with the stereotype that Asian guys are betas and super-intellectual geeks who succeed in life. Wait. Wait. Is that a bad thing? lol.

Anyways, as for East Asians in Holly wood....

True. I remember the first Jurassic Park. Animatronics were used, now all CGI. What a shame really.
