China blocks NY Times as Wen Jiabao $2.7 billion fortune is reported

The real question is how they get their money.

Did they siphon off the funds from the government or just use their political position to make money?

You don't get this rich from simply taking bribes and stealing money.

It's a very widespread phenomenon you see in other economies as well where the ones in power can profit from insider information. In this case, there's no victim, but just an example of how unfair the world really is.

In most civilized countries, using insider information to profit amount to insider trading and is thus fraud - a criminal offence. Just ask Rajat Gupta.

Will he be shot with a bullet to the back of his head or is it reserved only for commoners in PRC.

Mother of Wen Jiabao is "Yang Xiulan" not "Yang Zhiyun", Yang Xiulan one retired teacher of prime school,
Yang Zhiyun a male businessman, NY should work better to find a real name

I have been hoping our government would block New York Times for ages now.

Every article in that paper on china is negative, literally every article.
Same with Bloomberg.

It's about time china got tough on foreign media, we don't need foreign media trying to cause friction between the party and the people.
It's a subtle way to destabilise the political system thus hurting the Chinese economy and causing global investors to flee.

This is media warfare.

I have been a subscriber for NYT for over 20 years but I canceled my subscription and stop reading the paper altogether a few years ago for the reason you mention plus I felt it was no longer a fair paper in many issues. How much the paper has changed since its endorsement of the Iraqi War. I felt it has become, increasingly, a mouthpiece of the administration.

But anyway if the article is true and without overly exaggerations, it's quite a scoop for NYT but a sad happening in China. Perhaps that's what Deng Xiaoping meant when he said let some group in China get rich first more than 3 decades ago(?)

corrupt politicians are everywhere , atleast we have IAC and a strong electronic media , the chinese don't even have that .

Point is not the spelling of her name. Point is - is the 90 year old hag worth $120 million? And how did she get it?

They are two person, not one, Yang Zhiyun has but not Yang Xiulan, NY find the wrong one

This where democracy triumphs, we can act according to the situation and solve the problem.

Simple..according to Chinese logic here, a factory worker in PRC makes what a middle class man earns in India, so a middle class high school teacher can easily earn millions (of rupees)

Yes. But why do we have them? Because we want them there. Do you see a single Chinese poster here posting - "Let an investigative agency verify whether these claims are correct or false." ?? No. Firstly, they don't have the freedom to criticize their own leaders. Secondly, they enjoy being ruled.

If you say that, does that mean Indian corruption has been eliminated significantly due to the virtues of democracy compared to authoritarian China?

Once corruption takes root in a culture, it's awfully difficult to get rid of. If you're easily satisfied with rooting out one or two scapegoats while leaving the whole edifice intact, that's honestly not a solution.

Yes. The first step toward eliminating a problem is to acknowledge that it exists. Corruption charges have proved to be the political Waterloo of many Indian politicians - Bangaru Laxman, Rajiv Gandhi (Bofors), Ashok Chavan (Adarsh scam), Kalmadi (Commonwealth games - was in jail); Raja and Kanimozi - in jail too - and from the looks of it now Nitin Gadkari. Of course there are politicians get away with scams. The point is that there is a mechanism in place and there is a vocal opposition and a free press. There is also a very verbose population.

Rajat Gupta was just a fall guy and a scapegoat. You should evaluate the Jon Corzine case who has defrauded investors of 30-50 billion $ and walked away scot free.

There is no rule of law anywhere today.

Chidaramaram is a lot more corrupt yet he remains scot free.
