India will keep a close watch on the flow in the Brahmaputra river in coming weeks after China announced it was blocking one of its tributaries in Tibet to construct the country’s most expensive hydroelectric projects.

On Friday, China said it was blocking the Xiabuqu river, one of the many tributaries of the Yarlung Zangbo, (which is how the Brahmaputra is known in China) to build a dam as part of the Lalho hydroelectric project at Xigase in the Tibet Autonomous Region.

The Brahmaputra, one of India’s major rivers, originates in Tibet and flows into Arunachal Pradesh and Assam before going into Bangladesh.

The impact of the blocking of the river wasn’t immediately clear – or whether it would have any impact at all – but coming against the backdrop of the spat between New Delhi and Islamabad over the Indus Waters Treaty, the news is expected to ruffle more than diplomatic feathers in India.

Like the Brahmaputra, the Indus too originates in the Tibetan plateau in China.

. .
They are welcome to do as they please in their territory. They probably need more water for their barren Tibetan plateau just like India needs Indus water for our parched North West.

.
This tributary contributes less than 1% of Brahmaputra's water.
Infact 70% of Brahmaputra water is generated within India itself with only 3% coming from Bhutan & 27% from China.
On top of that NE India is 40% water surplus.

.
People from Pakistan think -- China is helping them...

But remember Blocking Bhramputra China is Upsetting Bangladesh -- Their Regional Partner...
Bhramputra is Main River for Bangladesh

So Now --Chinese Lost Bangladesh as well ---

Agreed but as relations between india and china are not good , we should not lose this chance to needle china .
Call their ambassador and lodge a protest or ask the tibetans in india to stage vocal protests in front of chinese embassy.
Dont decrease the pressure on the pedal.

Indian North west is Parched? Since when?

China can block entire water of Bramhautra if it wishes. Wont effect us much...but if we start damming Indus tributaries, you Pakistanis wont have much to smile.
Then we will have a war. As you cannot expect Pakistan to live without water. You want to fight for water, so be it.

You forgot we have Haryana and Rajasthan which needs water desperately. Even Delhi has very poor supply of water.

Good. China giving India a precedence when blocking Indus or other rivers flowing from India to Pakistan.

.
Pakistan cant do zilch as we would be taking our fair share of water from tributaries which were allotted to us but we generously never used it.

I have never seen Chinese acting so open/bold in arena of world...They look hell confident and ambitious. Indians look almost clueless and nervous when it comes to China and Russia.

Good for Pakistan, though.

God bless China, iron brothers !!!

China has right to explore rivers in its territory. You don't have the exclusive right to the river just because you are in downstream of it.

Please tell this to your higher than mountain brother country too.
