Myanmar's Kokang fighting continues amid state of emergency
Source:Xinhua Published: 2015-2-19

Fighting between Myanmar's government forces and the Kokang ethnic army in northeastern Shan state, continued over the last two days amid government's declaration of state of emergency, official reports said Thursday.

About 200-strong Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army ( MNDAA), which the government terms as Kokang renegade groups, attacked the government troops near Parsink Yaw village with small and heavy weapons but withdrew when counter-attacks were launched.

The government troops who were heading to Laukkai on major communication route to reinforce its battalions were also respectively ambushed by the MNDAA, Kachin Independence Army (KIA), Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) and Shan State Army (SSA)- Wanghai for several times in a number of areas in the state, the report said.

In the fighting since Feb. 15, three government force personnel and two local civilians were killed, while 32 others including one military officer and six local civilians injured, the report added.

The Myanmar government on Tuesday declared a state of emergency in Kokang region imposing martial law in the region following week- long armed clashes between the two sides.

The announcement of the President's Office said armed clashes in the Kokang region have caused widespread chaos leading to the failure of local administration mechanism despite earlier imposition of a curfew order since Feb. 12.

The state of emergency will be effective for 90 days, the announcement said.

The military administrative order empowered Commander-in-Chief of the Defense Services Senior-General Min Aung Hlaing to assume administrative and judiciary power in the Kokang self-administered zone.

The defense chief again re-empowered Col. Saw Myint Oo, the Laukkai Regional Commander, to exercise the executive and judicial powers for military administration in the zone.

Heavy fighting first broke out on Feb. 9 between government forces and the MNDAA in Kokang region. During the earlier week- long clashes up to Feb. 15, government forces carried out five air strikes against the Kokang army.

The government forces claimed 26 bodies of the Kokang army, seizing some small weapons and ammunition during that fighting, while 47 of its forces lost their lives with 73 others being wounded.

The battlefield mainly covered areas of Laukkai, Koneyan and Yan Lone Kyaine of Kokang region.

If things get worse and too many refugees flee to China, China should annex Myammar and bring peace and prosperity to Myanmar

your logic surprises me.

What can you expect from those mainland Chinese that were educated to only believe might is right and "power comes from gunpowder?" They only value what benefits the PRC can gain. Everything is about benefits to them! But of course , there are also silent majority that still value human compassion and traditions. That's why I said most so called Chinese here are probably wumao.

so we are suppose to help, let me say this, when I was in high school and worked at McD's, I was earning more in a part time position than a factory worker working more than 8 hours a day and 7 days a week.

China is poor, very poor, we are realistic. Compassion is for the rich.

You think that's bad? Of course it is, but how can one have compassion for others, when others never show it to them, how can one have love of animals, when one can barely feed themselves, how can one keep the streets clean when their own home is close to a dump.

You are sitting in a, I assume, Western country, and you want our lunch money to fight this? It's the CCP's JOB to take care of it's own tax paying citizens, if you want compassion, use your lunch money, don't ask for ours.

Uh, power does come from the barrel of a gun little friend. You see US has the biggest and most guns so it is most powerful. Might is might, what is right depends on what side you're on.

.
No guns but only human compassion only ends up being slaughtered, Chinese people learned this the hard way and won't make the same mistake in the future.

Chinese people never learn this lesson ... they make the same mistake every time, too kind to enemies who are nothing more than animals. Been going on for thousands of years.

Not this time around. China is strong enough to defend itself and nobody can touch China without risking their own survival. This is the hard-earned wisdom that started with the building of atomic bomb.

Currently, China's foreign policy is historical materialist. There is no rush, only calculated steps. Mistakes? Plenty, but, at least, once learned, there is no ideological rigidity to repeat the same mistake over and over again. That's is pragmatism.

China knows it needs a peaceful environment to continue its growth until basic national economic goals are reached. The crisis in Myanmar is viewed from this perspective. China won't be jumping up and down on the first sign of a crisis.

This is not China's way. It won't be.
