KARACHI: China has opted for importing cotton from India instead of Pakistan, as energy crisis in Pakistan has given rise to suspicions that the country's yarn exports may witness a decline.

It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistani industrialists had failed to meet production deadlines against export orders from China and the delivery had to suffer delays.

According to the head of Cotton Giners' Association, Ahsanul Haq 44 percent of the total amount of yarn imported by China last year had been ordered from Pakistan.

But, now Chinese traders have started to place these orders with India instead of Pakistan, pushing Indian yarn exports to an unprecedented level, he added.

No business likes delay in supplies which affect their own production and supply to customers. Pakistan needs to resolve the power crisis on war footings or face decline in exports and economy. By a rough estimate the economy can grow an additional 3~4 percent annually only by ensuring unintrupted power supply.

1. India has comparatively little surplus cotton. They can not meet the demand from China.

2. Pakistan's problems with energy crisis though real, do not necessarily mean loss of business. There is excess capacity at present as well. The cotton crop this year though better than last year, was still not a bumper crop. There are issues of supply of cotton. So, this is not a straight forward issue as the headline may suggest.

It might be better to change this thread name to cotton yarn instead of cotton. Two different things actually business-wise.
