Saudi Arabia backed down under pressure from the U.S. and allowed Pakistan to be placed on an international terror-financing watch list, officials from countries involved in the decision said Friday, dealing a blow to the South Asian country’s struggling economy.

The Financial Action Task Force’s decision to put Pakistan on a list of countries with lax controls over terror financing and money laundering is part of a push by the Trump administration to punish Islamabad over what it sees as inaction against terrorists operating...

Top US official on quiet Pakistan visit to improve ties

A senior United States National Security Council official has been quietly visiting the federal capital amid reports that both sides are giving ‘behind-the-scenes’ efforts aimed at fixing the strains in ties more chances to avoid a complete breakdown of the increasingly dysfunctional relationship.

“FS (Ms Tehmina Janjua) meets Ms Lisa Curtis, the Senior Director for South and Central Asia at the NSC of US, at Mofa (ministry of foreign affairs) this morning,” Foreign Office spokesman Dr Mohammad Faisal tweeted on Monday.

However, no further details of the meeting were provided in the tweet.

According to APP, Ms Curtis later called on Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal but what was conveyed by the US official during the meeting was not made public either.

The FO spokesman had previously said at the weekly briefing that
“Pakistan and the US are trying to find common ground in their bilateral relations, which is happening outside public glare”.

This said incident not means that Pakistan became enemy of USA... But at the end of the day, when they are around a table to negotiate, USA will enjoy more leverage... Same time Pakistan will be under pepressu...
Same with China also... They will heph & bail out Pakistan from these situations, but that give more authority or leverage over Pakistan...

Because he was more experienced in these fields... He knows more than what we know... He was the ambassador to the US, India and China and head of UN missions in Iraq and Sudan. Actually that was a feel good article for Pakistan and china blaming some elites...

China is not resolute against the indo-US propaganda and blackmailing. We saw it in case of NK and now we are seeing it in case of Pakistan. Russia was never a trusted ally to anyone except the genocidal assad, so nobody counts Russia when it comes to defending Pakistan's legitimate stance.

China says 'highly recognises' Pakistan's efforts against terror financing

China came out in support of Pakistan's anti-terror financing regime on Tuesday, days after it withdrew opposition against a US-led moveto place Pakistan on the Financial Action Task Force's (FATF) watchlist.

"In recent years, Pakistan has made important progress in actively strengthening financial regulations to combat terror financing," China's Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lu Kang said at a press briefing in Beijing.

The 37-nation FATF held its plenary meeting in Paris last week where it placed Pakistan on a so-called 'grey list' of the countries where terrorist outfits are still allowed to raise funds.

Editorial: Questions after the FATF debacle

The plenary held its first meeting on Pakistan on February 20 where China, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, which was representing the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), opposed the move to place Pakistan on the watchlist. But the US pushed for an unprecedented second discussion on Pakistan, held on February 22.

By then, Washington had convinced Riyadh to give up its support to Pakistan in return for a full FATF membership. This left only two – China and Turkey – in the Pakistan camp, one less than the required number of three members to stall a move.

At this stage, the Chinese informed Islamabad that they were opting out as they did not want to “lose face by supporting a move that’s doomed to fail”, an official source had told Dawn. “Pakistan appreciated the Chinese position and conveyed its gratitude to Turkey for continuing to support Islamabad against all odds,” the source added.

When asked about reports whether China had refused to bail out Pakistan at the FATF meeting, the Chinese foreign ministry spokesman said Pakistan's contributions in the area of countering terror financing were there for all to see.

"China highly recognises that [Pakistan's contributions], and hopes all relevant parties of the international community could arrive at an objective and fair conclusion on that," Lu said.

Talking about Pakistan's overall role in the war against terrorism, the spokesman said the Pakistani people have sacrificed "enormously" for the counterterrorism fight.

"Their hard efforts, both in terms of ground operations and in the field of terrorism financing, are there for all to see."

Lu reiterated that China has been calling on the international community to evaluate Pakistan's efforts against militancy "in an objective and fair way, instead of just pointing fingers at Pakistan out of bias".

"As an all-weather strategic cooperative partner for Pakistan, China will continue to enhance communication, coordination and cooperation with Pakistan on counterterrorism," he said.

Yeh, you are right...If Pakistan get good strong leaders (who are stronger than army generals) , all problems will be solved...

China should put its money where its mouth is. When you withdraw your opposition, that means you have shown your intent that when shit will hit the fan, you will simply backout. So much for higher than my *** friendship.
As for the GCC states why did Pakistan send its army when in return we cant even get a vote. Pathetic foreign policy at play here.
