^its not a d*ck m****** program.
I am speaking as anti Chinese or pro American person but I have only one question. Why we need another canal when we already have Panama canal ?

if you use your head little more, you would know panama canal controlled by US and US uses sanction and other means to coerce other countries. China does not want to live under US bully and charting its own path.

And if you willing put your neck outside your box, China also will work to build another canal parallel to Suez connecting Mediterranean. That prompted US pres call to Egypt. US has more things to tackle than it can handle. Using war and bully to impose hegemony is fading as tactics. Yes US was successful in creating chaos but will not gain any benefit. And waging war against China and/or Russia is not some US can handle. But population in US is duped to believe otherwise in the name of "freedom".

Panama Canal claims $737 mn in cost overruns - Yahoo News

Panama City (AFP) - The consortium expanding the Panama Canal is making fresh claims for cost overruns totaling $737 million, officials said Friday.

Canal administrator Jorge Quijano told reporters that the Panama Canal Authority had received two claims on Tuesday that "will be evaluated" to determine if there is probable cause.

But he warned that "at first glance, the issues will be very difficult for the counterparty to justify."

And in the latest setback for the behind-schedule, over-budget upgrade, a union representative said excavation work was on hold after negotiations broke down between the consortium and workers who have been on strike since Tuesday.

About 1,000 workers are on strike, demanding better safety and treatment. Talks between the two sides are due to resume Monday.

One of the consortium's latest claims, for $333 million, is related to the weight of the gate for the third set of locks it is building for the canal -- at 55,000 tonnes, compared to the 35,000 tonnes initially planned.

But Quijano pointed to a clause in the contract according to which the canal authority would pay up to the value of a gate weighing 49,000 tonnes.

The second claim, for $404 million, is due to delays in the fourth phase of excavation in the Pacific sector.

The consortium, Grupos Unidos por el Canal, says that the delay in excavation work may mean it will not receive water needed to test the gates.

Quijano, however, said he has a "plan B" to provide the necessary water for testing.

The canal authority will pay another $120 million in adjustments to the contract and other small claims, Quijano said.

Work began in 2007 to expand the canal with a third set of locks to enable it to handle the modern mega-freighters that global shipping companies prefer.

But the $5.25 billion project has been plagued by delays, strikes and a bitter dispute over $1.6 billion in cost overruns with the consortium carrying out the upgrade, led by Spanish construction firm Sacyr.

Initially scheduled for completion in 2014, the project's due date has been pushed back to early 2016.

Nearby Nicaragua, meanwhile, launched construction this week on a rival canal, a $50 billion project that the Chinese firm behind it plans to complete in five years.

Quijano estimated that the Nicaragua Canal construction would reduce by up to 30 percent the transit of ships through the Panama Canal, because it is closer to the lucrative market in the United States.

The people there started mass riots against it. Its an ecological desaster and a crime against earth. Its also completly useless since we aready have the Panama Canal. Two people already died

Lake Nicaragua is a unique eco system. And it will be destroyed for nothing.

There will always be narrow minded fools in the way of progress. Subsistence level farmers and fisherman don't know any other way to make a living so they are scared. Sprinkle in the token environut and you have a 'protest'. If these people always got their way we would still be living in trees or mud huts. The canal will double the country's GDP, employ tens of thousands of people and bring in billions in revenue to the government. It will also accomodate bigger ships than Panama Canal which will be forced to adapt to stay competitive and rates will go down. I heard thatLake Nicaragua will be preserved as a fresh water lake (anyone with more details confirm/contradict this). Nations have to move foward.

This is moving backward. Lake Nicaragua is Nicaraguas mayor freshwater reserve. Connecting it with the ocean is laughable.

I also doubt USA will allow this. Best thing would be to stage a coup now. Better now than later.

Good move, Americans will be jealous because China made canal is bigger and longer than theirs.

A canal is supposed to be as short as possible. Building a longer canal is actually laughable. Its like being happy to build a heavier airplane.

You overrate our omnipotency. Our BS plots have been exposed and neutralized in Cuba, Bolivia and Venezuela. Gone forever are the days when we could casually invade countries and overthrow governments. Lake Nicaragua will remain a freshwater lake.

It can´t remain once its connected with the oceans. It will become brakish.

I had read somewhere that the lake will be buffered. I'm not sure what the facts are on the ground though.

. .
The canal will be wide enough to accommodate our carrier battle groups when we patrol the Gulf of Mexico (routine of course).

That would be military suicide ha ha. I hope chinas military leadership is actually stupid enough to use an entire group through a canal where it can be target like a duck in the pond.
