China assures full support to Pakistan

Thats not entirely correct.
The indication from the "Friends of Pakistan" group is that Pakistan needs to approach the IMF. They then peruse over our fiscal policies and forward the loan accordingly. Only then will "FOP" feel satisfied and loan us money themselves.
Now that the IMF loan has been agreed, I think shortly the FOP will follow suit. I still maintain that had Musharraf been around, he would have found it easier to procure said funds than Zardari. I wonder why?
Even though it was less than what Pakistan needed, China did forward $500 million to help us with the balance of payment issue a couple of months back. They again did the same back in 92.

Dude, 500 million is peanuts for Chinese (they have 2 trillion reserves). Can you tell me what other advantages does Pakistan give to China apart from Strategic value vis-a-vis India.

and i'm confident you'll agree that $500 million is a lot compared to nothing?

As mentioned, yes it was far less than needed but a country, irrespective of a close alliance, cannot hand over $4-6 billion without any safeguards in place and that to a leader like Zardari.
With the IMF loan agreed and importantly without much interference/change to our fiscal policy, the FOP will be reassured and so will forward a loan of their own. This is what they have indicated for the record.

At the end of the day, we need circa $18-$20 billion over the next year yet only approached the IMF for a max of $7 Billion.
Hence I feel some developments are underway with China/Saudi. Just my opinion.

China quizzes Pakistan over Mumbai attack
2 Dec 2008, 1700 hrs IST, Saibal Dasgupta, TNN

BEIJING: Security agencies in China are quizzing their Pakistani counterparts about possible links between the attack in Mumbai and terrorist organisations based in Pakistan, informed sources said.

Chinese agencies have already taken measures to seal off possible loopholes in the country's borders with India, Pakistan and Afghanistan to ensure that no fugitives sneak in. Beijing is particularly worried that Pakistan based terrorists might seek refuge Xinjiang, the terrorism hit province bordering Pakistan.

"We are ready to cooperate with India and Pakistan to fight terrorists groups that are active in the region," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao told TOI. "We face the danger of terrorists' attacks from supporters of the East Turkmenistan movement. So, we are very concerned," he said.

China, which is a close allay of Pakistan, is capable of persuading leaders in Islamabad to part with critical intelligence and even hand over terrorists to India. But Beijing might prefer to deal with Pakistani leaders on this score to safeguard itself from terrorism spilling across the border to its own territory.

Liu, the foreign ministry spokesman, said China was ready to join hands with India to track down terrorists groups that may have been involved in the attack in Mumbai on November 26. The event demonstrated that India, Pakistan and Afghanistan continue to be serious targets of terrorists. Chinese security agencies were closely studying the incident to examine the role of terrorists in the region, he said.

"We have an arrangement with Pakistan on working jointly to combat terrorism," Liu said and added that the arrangement is working well.

But an anti-terrorism expert of the Chinese government feels that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was pointing a finger at Pakistan to "cover up" what he described as the "flaws and shortcomings" of the Indian government. The terrorists in Mumbai attack may have come from within India's border, Li Wei, director of anti-terrorist studies of China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations told the official media.

China's public security bureau recently indicated that most of the ultras active in the country's Xinjiang region have been trained and backed by Pakistan based terrorist organisations. Beijing is worried that the close linkages between different terrorists groups and possible links with the al-Qaida could escalate the already volatile law and order situation on the China-Pakistan border, sources said.

Li, who works for the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, said that the Mumbai attack will have profound influence on other nations in Asia. It is also a signal that existing measures on issues like early warning system and risk evaluation are not sufficient to be prepared for such brazen attacks, he said.

The remarks from the Chinese foreign ministry comes in the wake of reports that the Pakistani military brass has threatened to pull out troops from the Afghanistan border and thus bring an end to the US-led war on terror if there is any military action from the Indian side over the Mumbai attack.

Pakistan has for long managed to keep both US and China on tenterhooks by using threats of easing its military pressure on the Afghanistan border and weakening its surveillance of Afghanistan based terrorists groups including Al Qaida activists, informed sources said.

To answer your question; the advantage Pakistan provides to China is part of the reason which causes severe Indian bitterness.

Firstly and most importantly both Pak/China have an idealogical enemy in India due to its homogenous and nefarious designs and ambition towards others. Containment is a vital part of keeping such a foe at bay and this is where Pak/China are of use to each other.

Secondly, the Chinese will and are accessing the warm waters of the Arabian Gulf/ Indian ocean through Pak. for trade. This will negate the need for shipping via the South China sea.
Pakistan offers China access to the CAS and Gulf states through road and rail.
Oil imports will also in a few years go by rail through Pak. into China.
All indications are that the above will reduce costs by circa 40% which will translate into 10s of billions in savings.
Ofcourse Pakistan will derive benefit in transit fees, creation of jobs and infrastructure.
Read up on the geo-strategic location of Pakistan and Gwadar. A lot of things will make sense.

... For china, Pakistan is only of strategic value to contain India, apart from that it has no use of it.

Unfortunately in the past, wrong India foreign policy made Pakistan and China India’s common enemy. Frankly, this costs all three countries and benefits only weapon dealers.

India has a potential to become a great country, but a great country is never born through making neighboring countries its enemies (in addition to its good internal social system).

From China’s perspective, in addition to territorial dispute, which is originally faults of neither country, India still hosts Dalai Lama’s anti-China camp under the excuses of humanity.

Very unfortunately to India, China and Pakistan thus form a NATURAL ally, if you will. Just don’t understand why it seems difficult for many Indians to understand.

Fortunately, there is a sign that the three countries are easing off the tension in recent years. A vital element to keep the momentum is for GoI and all Indian parties to resolutely forsake its imperialistic idea, stop feeding its domestic consumers anti-China or anti-Pakistan propaganda. After all, make your neighbors, especially a country like China, your enemy, is not in India’s interest but only in its politicians’ or some interest groups’ interest.

I agree with most of your opinions particularly regarding India but as far as China is concerned, please don't forget that India is being prepared as a counter weight against China in the region, sort of like a regional policeman looking after its master's interest in the region.
