THE FLEXING of military muscles has spread beyond North Korea, with both Russia and China demonstrating their might to nervous neighbours.

China held a `surprise' naval exercise in the disputed South China Sea earlier this week as Russia put on a show of its resurgent military strength in the Black Sea.

China's activity in the disputed region involved some of its most modern warships.

An amphibious assault exercise - where amphibious landing craft deployed troops - was conducted just 80km off the Malaysian coast.

James Shoal, where the exercise took place, is the southern-most island China has laid claim to in the South China Sea, including the contentious Spratly Islands.

Chinese soldiers and marines reportedly conducted a ceremony on the island, vowing to "defend Chinese sovereignty".

On Monday, Vietnam accused China of opening fire on one of its fishing boats in the area. China denied the claim.

Half a world away, Russian President Vladmir Putin ordered a surprise military exercise from his presidential jet on a flight home from a United Nations conference in South Africa. The exercise in the Black Sea involved 30 navy ships, dozens of combat aircraft and hundreds of armored vehicles.

The Kremlin said the exercise was intended to test the military's ability to conduct a quick response.

Putin, who was elected for a third presidential term last year, has made the restoration of Russia's military power one of his top priorities.

Several successive squadrons of Russian navy ships have visited the Syrian port of Tartus, the only naval base Russia has outside the Soviet Union, the voyages intended to underline Moscow's support for Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has said that Russia plans to establish a permanent navy presence in the Mediterranean similar to the one it had during the Soviet times.

Putin flew in a military helicopter to watch the manoeuvres.

The Kremlin launched a military reform in the wake of the 2008 war with Georgia, when the Russian army struggled to quickly deploy its units to the conflict area with dozens of tanks and other armoured vehicles stranded by technical malfunctions on the march.

In its attempt to reform its military, Moscow has cut the number of officers and streamlined its military units.

The military also has sought to increase the number and scope of military exercises, helped by high oil prices.

Military exercises have to be planned and cannot come out of the blue though media is free to make sensational stories out of such incidents.

in putins case, he stated this was a drill to test response time etc. it is hardly a test of response time if everything is planned, ready and waiting. because more often then not, things are not how you have planned, or you are not ready for it. putin wanted to test response time, and so the element of suprise would of been needed to evaluate correctly how quickly they can respond.

it also states putin order it from his jet on his way back after the UN meeting, but i guess it all just sensationalism right? even the info came from russian sources?

Such an event cant be a full fledged military exercise, its more of a resources mobilization.

Military exercises need planning.

no they don't LOL , especially when the point of the exercise is to test the response time! lol its a reactionary test, not a test on strategy as such.

it is also just fitting they are doing a military exercise that in light of nth kora /usa tensions etc..... the korea chucks a temper tamtrun, usa flies b52 bombers in a joint exercise that is planned etc. north korea throw more of a tantrum and rip up the armistance, and we know how china and russia are somewhat at odds with the usa etc.. they conveniently do military exercises right after the usa/sth kora + north korea tensions etc.. it sends a message to the usa and its allies.

you would be dumb to think otherwise.

More surprises coming! Together China and Russia our nuclear arsenal is enough to finish our enemies!

.
yes, why army of China make military exercises, army of China should sleep all day, this is the normal thing China's army should do.
US army make war or exersises is the normal thing.

Army of one country only has two things to do , one is exercise ,another is war; If army of one country make exercise means "'surprise'", only means it need some war, then making exercise will be seen as not 'surprise'

Full fledged military exercises are diff. from large scale resource mobilizations.

The former needs thorough planning, the latter can be initiated at a short notice.

Media sensation nothing else.

Exercises are not like you wake up in the evening and go like, "hey lets drive down to McDonald's" and you just do that. They need planning.

god some people really are thick.

what would you consider a full fledged military exercise? half it's force? a quarter?

any military exercise can be conducted with or without planning, just the same as in a real war. you don't always get the luxury of being planned and prepared for situations that arise. that is why exercises with little to no planning are good. because you are then able to snap into action in more situations. most militaries do this... in boot camp they do it to the soldiers too, they could be asleep then all of the sudden woken up to do some drill. it is the same thing.

but its ok, you can be fickle and naive.

Putin flexes Russian military muscle in naval exercise | Reuters

Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin ordered large-scale military exercises in the Black Sea on Thursday, projecting Russian power towards Europe and the Middle East in a move that may vex neighbors.

Officials suggested the surprise drill would test reaction speed and combat readiness, but Putin's order also seemed a signal to the West of Russia's presence in the region.

Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters Putin triggered the maneuvers as he flew back overnight from South Africa after a summit of the BRICS emerging economies.

Peskov said 36 warships and an unspecified number of planes would take part, but not how long exercises would last.

Forget the stupid media.

Let me know how would you diff. between a military exercise and resource mobilization.

Just bcoz media calls it a military exercise, it does not become one. Use ur own brains too.....sometimes.

OMG, putins own officials said it themselves.

so in reality , it is not because the media calls it such and such. it is because russian officials have called it military exercise!!! lol

in fact, any exercise the military does is a military exercise, but for some unknown stupid reason you want to change it's definition lol

I asked you to differentiate between military exercise and resource mobilization.

Did you answer it? NO

Just to add....the Russian military was ready in its planning and just the orders were sudden.

In that case, their planning might be in place already.

The media happily used the word "surprise" to spice thing up when the fact is the military was already prepared and were just waiting for the orders.

If anyone thinks 36 warships can undertake a exercise out of a blue moon without any planning is really stupid.

.
China and Russia both know USA is planning a surprise attack. So we are doing our surprise military exercises to prepare for the surprise attack.
