Guangzhou Court, China Unicom Use 5G to Conduct Remote Trials

(Yicai Global) April 2 -- A court in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou is adopting China Unicom's fifth-generation wireless technologies to facilitate remote trials.

Unicom, officially China United Network Communications Group, penned a deal with the Guangzhou Intermediate People's Court yesterday, the telecoms carrier told Yicai Global. The firm is building a 5G base station outside the court that will cover the building's entire 4,000 square meter area.

China Unicom began testing its remote trial technology with the Guangzhou Internet Court a month ago, eliminating the need for plaintiffs and defendants to physically appear in the courthouse. Judges were able to lead the trials using ultra-high-definition audio and video transmissions running through 5G.

China's three major mobile operators, Unicom, China Mobile and China Telecom, have all been testing various indoor and outdoor 5G applications in major cities recently. The country hopes to have 100,000 new 5G base stations up and running this year, compared with a global total of about 300,000 to 400,000, according to research from investment bank CSC Financial.

5G will need twice as many base stations as 4G, so there will be large-scale investment, CSC's report said, adding that operators are battling to get the most stations up and running.

New encryption technology available for 5G networks can also help protect the privacy of parties in court, China Unicom said, adding that 5G trials also use speech recognition technology to created automated records of proceedings

The carrier plans to set up 3,000 base stations in Guangzhou ahead of World Telecommunications Day on May 17, General Manager Kong Xiangbin told Yicai Global, adding that the company will be the first to cover the city's urban area.

China Unicom has worked with the country's biggest telecoms equipment makers, Huawei and ZTE, and several terminal manufacturers in order to test 5G in several Chinese cities this year.

At present, terminal 5G download speeds can reach about 750 megabits per second. But this could reach as much as 1 gigabit per second, or six times 4G speeds, due to a reduced user-end transmission delay, the firm's test results show.

Special: Greater Bay Area

(ECNS) - Nansha Bridge opened to traffic on Tuesday in Guangdong Province, providing a key link in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and also boasting 5G mobile connectivity.

Also known as the second Humen Bridge, the 12.89 kilometer-long span links Dongyong Town in Guangzhou City to Shatian Town in Dongguan City, with eight lanes in both directions. It has a designed service life of 100 years and allows traffic to flow at up to 100 kilometers per hour.

The bridge cuts the journey from southern Guangzhou to Dongguan by 10 kilometers, 30 minutes faster than the previous travel time.

The Guangdong branch of China Tower, which primarily engages in construction, maintenance and operation of telecommunications towers, has cooperated with three telecom operators and a Guangdong company to offer 4G and 5G mobile networks on the bridge, making it the first bridge in China to offer 5G service.

Over the past 20 years, Humen Bridge has been the only expressway connecting the east and west sides of the Pearl River, but it was increasingly unable to meet transport needs amid the economic rise of the Pearl River Delta.

An official from the Guangdong Provincial Department of Transportation said about 50,000 vehicles a day are estimated to pass over Nansha Bridge.

China has built 718,000 5G base stations, most in the world-cnTechPost

China has built the world's largest 5G network, with a cumulative total of 718,000 5G base stations completed, Liu Liehong, vice-minister of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), said today, according to cnr.cn.

Previous data showed that by the end of September, China had opened 690,000 5G base stations, and cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hangzhou had achieved contiguous coverage of 5G networks in urban areas.

As of late September, the cumulative number of terminal connections for 5G users in China had exceeded 100 million.

The MIIT said in late September that the next step will be to steadily advance network construction. At the same time, it will strengthen research on 6G development directions and key technologies.

Chinese telecom operators China Mobile and China Broadcast Network have entered into a 5G sharing agreement on jointly building a 700MHz wireless network, while China Mobile will also share its 2.6GHz network with China Broadcast Network for a fee.

Under the agreement, the 700MHz and 2.6GHz wireless networks use the same shared technology solution, with China Mobile providing 700MHz frequency 5G base stations to China Broadcast Network for use in its transmission network at local or provincial hubs for a fee. China Broadcast Network pays China Mobile for the service.

China Broadcast Network pays China Mobile for the use of the network, including 700MHz wireless network operation and maintenance fee, 700MHz transmission network use fee, 2G/4G/5G network use fee.

During the first phase of cooperation, China Broadcast Network pays China Mobile 700MHz network operation and maintenance fees and 700MHz transmission bearer network usage fees starting from the second month after the 700MHz frequency 5G base stations are connected to China Broadcast Network's core network or transmission nodes designated by China Broadcast Network, and the fees are calculated based on the number of base stations.

China Broadcast Network will settle the 2G / 4G / 5G network usage fees to China Mobile based on the amount of network services used by its customers on China Mobile's 2G / 4G / 5G network.

During the first five years of the second phase of the cooperation, China Broadcast Network will pay China Mobile network usage fees, including 700MHz wireless network operation and maintenance fees, 700MHz transmission bearer network usage fees, and 2.6GHz network usage fees, at rates agreed by both parties.

Based on the operation and cooperation in the first five years of the second phase of the cooperation, the companies will determine the settlement amount for the next five years of the second phase of the cooperation in 2026 through friendly negotiations. Both parties shall determine by mutual agreement the settlement of cooperation fees for customer service, international business beyond the agreement.
