5G clinic serves troops at sea

(Global Times) 10:16, May 15, 2019

No need to go to big hospitals far away, as a recently established 5G remote ultrasonic clinic improves medical support for army personnel and residents on the islands in the South China Sea while reducing costs.

Since the remote clinic started operations in April, 62 military personnel and civilians have benefited from the 5G remote ultrasound outpatient service. Among them are 58 servicemen and women stationed on Xisha Islands, who underwent abdominal and gynecological check-ups and emergency services without leaving the island, PLA Daily reported on Tuesday.

The clinic allows troops and residents living on the islands in the South China Sea suffering from health problems get timely medical treatment via 5G technology, it reported.

Lü Faqin, the doctor of the ultrasonic clinic, was quoted by the PLA Daily as saying that when troops suffer from injuries or emergency symptoms, they could receive diagnosis and treatment within 24 hours with the 5G technology.

Doctors from the Hainan Hospital of the People's Liberation Army General Hospital, based in Sanya could remotely monitor their conditions.

Doctors can remotely operate the mechanical arm in real time at the patient end.

Through 5G technology, images can be transmitted in real time and precise positioning can be achieved for remote ultrasonic examination and treatment. Doctors and patients can also communicate through voice and video.

The clinic would solve the problem of the lack of ultrasound doctors in the South China Sea, Chen Xiangmiao, a research fellow at the Hainan-based National Institute for the South China Sea, told the Global Times.

When there is no such clinic, patients in urgent need of medical attention were always being airlifted to other hospitals and even other provinces such as Guangdong, according to Chen.

Chen noted it costs five to 10 hours, depending on weather conditions, to dispatch a military aircraft and transfer the patient in the South China Sea to nearest hospitals, usually those in Sanya and Haikou.

There are two major hospitals in the South China Sea - one in the Yongshu Reef of the Nansha Islands and the other on Yongxing Island of the Xisha Islands, media reported.

A patient from Xisha Islands was diagnosed with acute calculi obstruction by using 5G remote ultrasound technology. It only took two minutes to diagnose the patient's symptoms.

The next morning, the remote ultrasonic robot found that the patient's stone had been discharged.

The Hainan Hospital in Sanya will also program robots to launch remote ultrasonic checks to monitor the daily training of the soldiers, and develop more remote clinics for the solders and other residents in the South China Sea, said the PLA Daily report.

The very first 5G (fifth generation) mobile test call was successfully completed in Hungary using equipment produced by the Chinese telecoms giant ZTE, official sources said in Budapest on Thursday.

"The 5G call was made between two base stations in downtown Gyor (northwest Hungary) and it reached a data throughput rate of 1.7 Gbps (billions of bits per second)," the Hungarian government announced on its website.

The first 5G mobile video call test was performed by the Hungarian subsidiary of the Norwegian telecoms group Telenor.

The network equipment used was that of Telenor's main contracted partner, the Shenzhen-based Chinese ZTE Corporation.

ZTE presented details of its revolutionary 5G development in Budapest at a conference back in September 2017.

According to the Hungarian government, the 5G call was made in a closed test system and reached such a speed that would allow users to download a high-definition movie in about 20 seconds.

Once the 5G network becomes commercially available, the transmission speed will be almost twice as fast, as the theoretical limit of the new system will be 3 Gbps, according to the government.

China unveils first 5G 'smart museum'

Xinhua, May 18, 2019

A central Chinese museum on Friday became the first in the country to offer full 5G coverage and multiple related services including real-time viewing of a 2,400-year-old bronze chime.

The Wuhan Provincial Museum said the entire museum is now covered by the 5G wireless network, and a package of 5G-based applications are offered to allow the public to have "unprecedented" interactions with the collections.

Among the new services is a virtual reality (VR) zone that allows visitors to strike the Zenghouyi chime bells, a treasure of the museum dating back to the Warring State Period (475-221 BC), in a virtual environment. The chime, after excavation in 1978, had only been physically struck three times.

Panoramic cameras were also installed to capture real-time videos of the chime, which are then transmitted via the 5G network to mobile applications and screens at the museum.

"With larger bandwidth and lower latency, the 5G network makes such live broadcasting of collections possible. It presents smoother videos and allows access to a greater number of viewers," said Yang Lisheng, deputy director of the museum's information center.

The museum said they have worked with China Mobile and tech giant Huawei to introduce the 5G network at the facility.

As International Museum Day falls on Saturday, more Chinese museums are expected to announce their attempts in technological innovation, which is being promoted to facilitate the protection of and public access to the country's many cultural relics.

The National Cultural Heritage Administration (NCHA) said last week that China is working to build smart museums with new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), VR, augmented reality (AR), immersion display and smart guidance.

China owns 767,000 sites of immovable cultural relics and over 100 million pieces of movable artifacts, as well as a huge number of relics in the hands of private collectors.

The number of museums in China has increased from 349 in 1978 to currently over 5,000, according to the NCHA, and their popularity has been on the rise especially among domestic tourists.

The 5G industrial chain is expected to expand in China as a result of the comprehensive implementation of a new round of 5G plans.

Thanks to the country’s increasingly mature 5G technology and products, all links along the 5G industrial chain from systems and chips to terminals have reached a level of commercialization, said Wen Ku, director of the telecom department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology at a recent press briefing.

The ministry will continue to improve the policy environment and support related companies to build networks to create a favorable environment for the application and development of 5G, Wen added.

To embrace the commercialization of 5G, local governments in China have issued relevant plans. On May 15, south China’s Guangdong Province initiated an action plan to accelerate the development of the 5G industry between 2019 and 2022. According to the plan, the province will build a 5G broadband city cluster in the Pearl River Delta region to form a world-class 5G industrial cluster by the end of 2022.

Major telecom carriers have published their 5G plans as well as conducted related experiments. China Mobile has launched large-scale 5G trials and application demonstrations in 17 cities. China Unicom plans to ensure uninterrupted 5G network coverage in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Nanjing, Hangzhou and Xiong’an New Area, and make 5G hotspot coverage available in 33 cities. China Telecom also plans to accelerate the deployment of 5G networks in major cities, and build 20,000 5G base stations in 2019.

Large-scale construction of 5G base stations will also begin. Guangzhou will build 10,000 5G base stations in 2019, striving to take the lead in trial commercialization of 5G. Shanghai will create over 10,000 5G base stations this year and 30,000 5G base stations by 2021.

China is forecast to spend 900 billion yuan to 1.5 trillion yuan on the construction of 5G networks from 2020 to 2025, and the country’s telecom carriers are expected to generate 1.9 trillion yuan in total revenue from 5G-related business during the same period, according to the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT).

The economic output directly driven by 5G commercial deployment is estimated to reach 10.6 trillion yuan, which will directly add as much as 3.3 trillion yuan from 2020 to 2025, according to a report issued by the CAICT.

Beijing on Wednesday set up a 5 billion yuan ($724 million) fund to spur development of the fifth-generation or 5G mobile technology industry, its latest effort to gain an edge in the commercialization of 5G tech.

The fund was established jointly by the Beijing Science and Technology Innovation Investment Management Co Ltd, Beijing Yizhuang International Investment and Development Co Ltd and State-owned China Jianyin Investment Ltd. It will focus on investing in leading high-tech firms across the entire 5G industrial chain.

"At present, 5G has become the driving force to boost China's innovative and high-quality development," Sui Zhenjiang, vice-mayor of Beijing, said on Wednesday during a 5G industrial development and investment summit held in Yizhuang, in southeastern Beijing.

"Beijing is actively transforming itself as a national scientific and technological innovation center. With advantages in complete telecom infrastructure, abundant talent and strong research and development capabilities, we have the resolve to accelerate the push for making breakthroughs in 5G technologies and build an independent and innovative 5G industrial system," Sui said.

As of May 24, the three major telecom operators-China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom-have established 4,700 5G base stations in Beijing, according to Wang Gang, head of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology.

Wang said by the end of this year, 5G network construction will cover the area within the Fifth Ring Road in the city.

The Beijing municipal government plans to invest at least 30 billion yuan by 2022 to build 5G networks, according to a 5G development plan released in January. In Beijing's road map for 5G development from 2019 to 2022, the municipal government has set a goal to develop its 5G-related industry to realize an income of 200 billion yuan by 2022.

The city said it hopes that by 2022, Beijing-based scientific research units and enterprises can be a key contributor to global 5G technical standards, accounting for more than 5 percent of all primary and essential international 5G patents.

Huang Jianjun, vice-president of China Jianyin Investment Ltd, said 5G technologies have been deeply integrated with artificial intelligence, big data, the internet of things and other emerging technologies, ushering in a new era of internet of everything and deep interaction between humans and machines.

"The 5G tech will not only improve the way people live and work, but also accelerate China's social digital transformation as well as build key competence amid the uphill battle in the global industry," Huang said.

"There are huge investment opportunities for 5G industries, including materials, chips, main equipment suppliers, base stations, antenna, cloud computing, internet of vehicles and the internet of things," Huang said. "5G will bring historic opportunities for China's economic and social development."

A new 5G research institute has also been established in Yizhuang, Beijing on Wednesday.

According to a new report by Global System for Mobile Communications Association, China is set to become the largest 5G market in the globe, with 460 million 5G users by 2025.

China Construction Bank Plans to Open 10 Automated 5G Banks in Beijing in 2019
One of China’s leading big state-owned banks has unveiled plans to use the country’s 5G network to facilitate the creation of unmanned banking outlets.

According to a report from STCN.com China Construction Bank (CCB) plans to unroll 10 5G automated banks in Beijing before the end of the year, with three to commence operation in as early as June.

The three banks will be situated in Tsinghua Garden, Zhongliang Square and Chang’an Xingrong Centre.

A CCB representative said that 5G automated banks mark a continuation of the bank’s fintech strategy following its launch of China’s first unstaffed banking outlet in April 2018.

The new outlets in Beijing are “version 3.0” of CCB’s automated banking model, making use of multiple technologies including 5G, the Internet of Things and biometrics.

“In April 2018 CCB opened the first unstaffed bank in the sector in Shanghai- this was version 1.0 of the CCB smart bank,” said the representative.

“Frankly speaking its practicality wasn’t strong, but based on CCB’s next generation of systems and fintech strategy, and via continuous technological upgrades, the new unstaffed banks mark an upgrade from version 1.0 to version 3.0, integrating multiple technologies including 5G, the Internet of Things and the blockchain.”

According to CCB its new 5G unstaffed banks will possess two key advantages compared to traditional, bricks-and-mortar banking outlets:

  1. Super fast broadband and minimal delays bring about an “immersive experience” and facilitate coordination between banking outlets.
  2. Integration with the “Internet of Everything” – all devices and equipment at automated banking outlets will be connected to Internet of Things platforms, to provide real-time collection of data, as well as real-time response and control.
“The cameras, gateways and other equipment within automated banks can be linked together using 5G technology – for example once a customer enters an outlet the camera can use facial recognition technology to identify the customer and basic information and financial information,” said a CCB tech executive.

“The automated bank’s transaction area is a comparatively sealed space, and unified back-end control of the transaction area is used to ensure that customers are the only individuals in transaction areas when receiving financial services.”

China's telecoms industry regulator will officially release 5G business licenses to its major carriers on Thursday, helping the country get into a fast lane in commercializing the next generation of wireless technologies.

The China's telecoms industry regulator will officially release 5G business licenses to its major carriers on Thursday, helping the country get into a fast lane in commercializing the next generation of wireless technologies.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology
(MIIT) is to issue 5G licenses to carriers Thursday morning, a move the official entry of the second-largest economy in the 5G era and unleashing new value worth 900-1,300 billion yuan ($130-188 billion), several sources close to the matter confirmed with the Global Times on Wednesday night.

With the distribution of 5G licenses, China will build 5G networks with more than 3 million 5G base stations in three years, Xiang Ligang, a veteran industry insider, told the Global Times on Wednesday.

In five years, China will build up 6 million base stations, accounting for nearly half of 5G bases worldwide, and these three networks are the largest in terms of scale in the world, he noted.

The domestic telecoms industry has shown excitement over the rollout of 5G networks, which will help usher in a myriad of 5G applications, a new business model, while upgrading traditional industrial lines.

"The release of 5G licenses shows that China has met all the requirements for 5G networks, from technologies to equipment to operations," Li Zhen, an industry expert at Beijing-based CCID Consulting, told the Global Times in an earlier interview.

China, along with South Korea and the US, are widely considered the leaders in the 5G era, as they have been the largest contributors to technology development and standard-setting.

Initially, 5G networks will cover major populated areas, which will also be compatible with 4G networks, and the 5G networks are expected to achieve full coverage from 2020 to 2025, Li said.

China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom are expected to obtain the 5G licenses at the same time, analysts said.

The US-led global campaign to ban Huawei from the development of 5G networks has not hindered China's continuous steps forward in 5G deployment, and major Chinese companies are also helping other countries, like the UK and South Korea, launch their first commercial networks.

"The official launch will be thrilling, as it's also an opportunity to show that Chinese firms have overcome obstacles and become more competitive in the 5G race," Xiang said.

The full-scale acceleration of 5G use will also lead the country to 5G gadgets like 5G smartphones.

China's smartphone business will see a rebound in 2020 thanks to the 5G era, he noted.
