The issue is not just child marriage but teenage pregnancy.
Yes education and awareness would help, but I'm not sure if economic development is related because teenage pregnancies 're high even in countries like USA.

The topic is about child marriage and subsequent motherhood, and some of the comments are shocking, assuming that they are coming from relatively educated people.

1. Child marriage and motherhood is not a western problem, but it is a problem in South Asia, western teens might get pregnant but they barely become mothers. Even if we assume that west also has this problem, that's not an excuse for everybody else to continue this practice. A 13 or 15 years old girl is physically and mentally not mature enough to become a mother, she should be allowed to live her childhood and become educated first.

2. Are some of the members here trying to say that all those fortunate girls with saner parents who don't get married during their childhood are indulging in child sex? That's a Talibani attitude in my honest opinion.

3. A Bangladeshi member even went to the extent of finding western conspiracy in birth control, my god!! No wonder their country is probably the most densely populated country on earth.

We need serious social re-education for this part of the world, and for all, illiteracy is not to be blamed alone here.

The solution to this, as is to most problems; education. However, having a degree and no job prospects can be equally burdensome. It might also lead to severe depression for working hard to achieve education with no fruit at the end. Therefore, jobs must be created.
However, conservative people, or people from countries with low public security will be hesitant to let a young woman travel and work out of fear of her safety. Therefore, protection against women harassment and general public security must be priority. When these aims have been achieved, a woman would be educated enough to know her rights, independent enough to support herself financially, not be a 'burden' on her parents and will feel safe and confident to demand and exercise her rights.
Small changes, honestly enforced can transform a society.

This was in 1998 when the problem of underage pregnancy was much worse than it is today. In Britain today the number of teenagers under 16 giving birth is only a few hundred. There are far more in developing countries which is what this article is referring to.

Between 20 and 40 is 20 years, you can make ten babies in that time and you will be fully prepared for it.

It's still so rare as to barely be an issue in the case of under 16s. There are many 16-19 year olds who get pregenant but I don't really think having children at that age is major problem. Probably not desirable but not a major problem.
