On this day (July 23, 1965) Air Marshal Malik Nur Khan Awan, took over the command of Pakistan Air Force. He remained Commander-in-Chief of PAF till August 31, 1969. AM Nur Khan led PAF in its convincing victory over an enemy thrice its size. This ‘Man of Steel’ was an icon of Integrity, Visionary Leadership and Courage. He was also highly respected for his intellectual prowess and remarkable managerial skills.
Air Marshal Nur Khan also served PIA as its Managing Director from 1959 to 1965; and later as the airline's Chairman from 1973 to 1978. Under his dynamic Leadership, PIA became one of the world’s best airlines. The Air Marshal also served as the Governor of West Pakistan from September 1, 1969 to February 1, 1970. Besides this, he also remained President of the Pakistan Hockey Federation from 1976 to 1984 and Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board from 1980 to 1984. Under his able leadership Pakistan Hockey won two titles each of World Cup, Champions’ Trophy and Asian Games.
For his valour, courage, and distinguished command during 1965 War, Air Marshal Nur Khan was conferred upon the prestigious award of Hilal-i-Jurat. Additionally, in recognition for his meritorious services, PAF Base at Chaklala, Rawalpindi was renamed as PAF Base, Nur Khan. His altruistic services for PAF, especially during the 1965 Indo-Pak war can never be forgotten.
