Probably because Kiyani promised to keep the Army in check and to prevent any military takeover despite the record breaking corruption and abuse of power by this Govt. Damn it is unfair to the guy who deserved to be COAS after timely retirement of Kiyani, it also sort of gives the impression as if the rest of the Generals are incompetent when compared to Kiyani.

not true but in PK it is about keeping your 'flanks' secure. by offering Kiyani 3-yr extension, the GoP(read Prez) felt he could concentrate on 'solidifying' his seat for the 5 year term and also work to re-elect the PPP govt for another 5. but the best laid plans can somehow go 'kaput'!!!
 
Kayani visits Kurram & Mohmand Agency, appreciates sacrifices of soldiers

Rawalpindi Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani visited Kurram and Mohmand Agencies, today.
According to ISPR, At Kurram, he was briefed about the ongoing Operation Koh-i-Sufaid aimed at clearance of miscreants’ pockets of resistance. Later COAS also visited Bhoidag Sector in Mohmand Agency, where he was briefed about the units deployed along Pak-Afghan border.
During interaction with troops at both places, COAS appreciated the firm resolve and supreme sacrifices being offered by the Army for the security of Motherland.
Earlier on arrival at Kohat COAS was received by Corps Commander Lieutenant General Khalid Rabbani.

Rawalpindi - December 28, 2011:
His Excellency Mr Tholhath Ibrahim Kaleyfaanu, Minister of Defence and National Security, Maldives, called on Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani today at General Headquarters.
The visiting dignitary remained with the COAS for some time and discussed matters of bilateral interest.

I'm more curious about the profile of his body guard with black glasses.

He must be a superman kind!

Rawalpindi - November 30, 2011:

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani visited Kotri, Sindh, today, to witness training activities at Kotri Ranges.

The training activities were focused at improving the skills and techniques of troops employed in special operations, particularly anti terrorist operations.

Earlier, on arrival, the COAS was received by Lieutenant General Muhammad Zahir ul Islam, Commander Karachi Corps.
