Chief of Army Staff General Qamar during a Q&A session with international media.

Question: How do you see security cooperation with #China progressing in the next decade?
#COAS
▫️
We are not looking for camp politics.

▫️
We had historically excellent relations with US. The good army we have today is largely built and trained by US. The best eqpt we have is American equipment. We still have deep cooperation with #US and our Western friends. A month back #American Air Force was here for a huge exercise with our Air Force.

▫️
China of course is a very important neighbor and has helped us in many ways. Our military cooperation with China is growing because we are denied equipment from the West. Many of the deals which were concluded have been cancelled. So what do we do. I shall just give you an example: We bought #T129 helicopters from #Turkey, it's a very good machine, the deal was signed, it's a defensive weapon, it's a gunship but the engine was of American origin so the Americans refused to give the third party certification. So what do we do? Either we wait or go somewhere else; either go to #Russia or go to China. We will prefer to maintain a balance.

Similarly we were looking for some submarines and the #Germans were suppose to give the engines and everything was done. When the submarines were ready, Germans refused to give us the engines. #France has done the same of course under the Indian pressure because #India is a big buyer. So what do you do? It is your responsibility to maintain the balance. If you are tilted towards one side outrightly, we'll find sources from where we can get weapons to save our self. You need to carry out introspection, whether your policy is right or not.

We have been your allies for a very long time, we were part of SEATO, CENTO & Baghdad pact, we supported you in Vietnam, we supported you in Afghanistan, we helped you dismantle the erstwhile Soviet Union and the muck you created yesterday we are trying to clean that. So we have paid a lot of cost. What are you doing about us. I must ask you the question. Are you maintaining a balanced approach or not.

▫️
#CPEC is a very important development. There was a problem in Pakistan that we had shortage of electricity, huge shortages. Nobody was coming forward because there was lot of terrorism so Chinese stepped forward and they took the risk and they built these plants. But it doesn't mean that Pakistan is a no go area, if you feel that there is too much of a Chinese influence in Pakistan, the only way to counter is by bringing in the counter investment.

Who stops you? We welcome any investment. Few days back Berrick Gold has signed the deal in which they are going to explore a huge copper mine. Berrick Gold is a Canadian company, the Canadian Ambassador is sitting here. So we will welcome the investment and cooperation from the entire world.

Is there a recording of the full Q&Asession available? If so would be interesting to hear.

He and the rest of his generation in the Pakistan army leadership should be put out to pasture. Their time has come and gone.

.
Shouldn't be anyone except the Pakistani's themselves to decide on their military's leadership. That being said, who are the options besides Bajwa, and would there be a difference in how they go about running things?

I have to agree on this as well the old guard standing and no fresh blood quickly rising to the top could be deter mental just see how long we wasted on the Turkish helicopter fiasco. Other problem which was also mentioned by David Smith believe his name was US Army is foreign exchange Pak Army coming back and prevented often times adopted new ideas but the seniors don’t allow free flow of though, basically what teacher said is right and nothing more.

Damn never know this side of Bajwa, he literally show the west mirror, and I am glad he mentioned the examples of T-129 and Submarines, I hope American top brass is watching and realize that its not Pakistan that is drifting away, its the US that is favoring India and pushing Pakistan away, America can still fix things by stop with this whole threatening BS, release CSF , let Pakistan buy addition F-16's and give PAF access to V upgrades, release the T-129 engines and PA will gladly start buying American/Western stuff and then you will get a balance policy of Pakistan towards both China and America, but if America keep favoring India and keep denying us weapons so we have to go somewhere to maintain the balance of power in the region.

.
France has done the same of course under the Indian pressure because India

Nope general, your strained relationship with France was entirely your own PrimeMinisters doing, you don't go on openly bashing leader of a country then also expects him to provide you with advance military equipments

You won't get F16V for now as the aircraft (rebranded as F21) is competiting with rafale, typhoon, grippen and f15ex for indian mrfa tender. Although its almost pretty obvious india would choose rafale, however until there is a small possibility that exist that india might buy f16v, the upgrades won't be offered to Pakistan.

I doubt it. As far as I know US arms exports to Pakistan has reduced quite drastically over the last couple of years. I’m no expert, so I won’t be offended if you fact check me —- but I don’t recall any exports to Pakistan in 2019 or 2021.

On the other hand, outside the headline purchases, exports to India has been growing rather quickly. Even if India does not pick a US platform for its upcoming mrfa, selling anything to Pakistan would throw an unnecessary wrench into indian business/relations.

Besides like all countries with rivals, India has a policy of insisting their arms trade partner limit engagement with Pakistan for business to flourish in India. This is only natural.

Another example, the French. We already know the French are scaling down exports and cooperation with Pakistan — you can already see this playing out on the submarine front. I’m sure those in the know would agree.

Cmon dear, that's going a bit far. This theory always attracts everyone but it isn't the case. It's not a one man show like it seems.

Bad people are always everywhere, that's natural. However, it shouldn't be taken as a rule that they control everything.

Till 80s, a LARGE proportion of officers used to go for courses in US, that thing is now, maybe 1% of that time. Officers now go to China and Far Eastern countries as well.... Almost three dozen countries spread over all the continents.
