World’s largest solar park to change face of arid north Gujarat region, Gujarat set to be the Solar Capital of the World – Narendra Modi

Gandhinagar, Friday: Even as Gujarat Government has decided to harness renewable sources of energy to maximum possible extent to solve the nation’s power shortage, Chief Minister Narendra Modi today said the State is set to become the ‘Solar Capital of the World’.

He w as inaugurating the 30 MW solar power project in near Gunthaw ada vill age in Kankrej taluka in Banaskantha district, bordering the Rann of Kutch. The plant set up by Mozer Baer Green Energy Company on 320- acre at a cost of Rs.465-crore in the private sector was commissioned in four months.

While the Centre could not start any solar plant even after announcing its solar power policy, Mr. Modi said, Gujarat has set up four such projects, including one at Charnaka.

Mr. Modi said the world’s largest solar park combining the vast stretches of land with ample supply of sunrays is also coming up in the region. The initiative should go a long way in solving the coal shortage. He said that Gujarat has already succeeded converting disasters into opportunities, as Kutch became the fastest growing district in the country during the last decade. Gujarat’s 1,600-km long coastline is humming with a number of seaports. And now it is converting the arid Kutch, Banaskantha and Patan districts into prosperous power producing regions.

He recalled that Gujarat was a power deficient state but today distributing 24-hour electricity to all the 18,000-odd villages in the state. With proper conservation and management of water and electricity, he said, Jyoti Gram Yojna has changed the socio-economic conditions of Gujarat, creating a mass awareness too.

While the Centre has been reduced to a power-corrupt government amidst zero development, Mr. Modi said, Gujarat has shown how power could be utilized for all all round growth. The state is undertaken new initiatives in recycling biomass and agro-waste.

Mozer Baer Company’s president Dipak Puri and project chairman Ratul Puri said the project should provide electricity to 50,000 villagers. They praised the Gujarat Government’s proactive policies.

Others present on the occasion included Social Justice Minister Fakirbhai Vaghela, Ministers of State Liladhar Vaghela and Parbat Patel, ex-MP Haribhai Chaudhry, MLAs and office-bearers.

Narendra Modi's name has become akin to the development in Gujarat. But isnt naming the website narendramodi.in a bit of an overkill.
I am not against Narendra Modi, I highly appreciate the work he is doing in Gujarat and consider his administration as a model that other states should follow especially states like Orissa, UP, Bihar, Kerala etc. Kerala more so since infrastructure in kerala is in a pathetic condition even after being a highly literate state. I think its great that India is Going after renewable energy with pretty good speeds and i wish our Pakistani buisness wake up but claiming the worlds largest is for local consumption only by a politician who himself had absolutely nothing to do with this project or any other project of this nature any how worlds largest title is some thing a lot of countries going after lets see who wins it and i hope all countries go in this direction.

It wasn't that long ago that solar plants competing for the "World's largest" title were talking in the range of about 5MW, then 10 or 15. But as the 100MW solar farms going up in France, and the massive expansion of plans for a San Antonio solar plant from 50MW to 400 show, the scale of what's impressive has changed somewhat. Now another company is vying for the title of world's largest solar photovoltaic power plant, and they have communities from across the US competing with each other for the right to host it.

National Solar Power (NSP), a utility-scale solar developer, has named seven communities in the Southeast of the US as finalists in a competition to host the world's largest solar PV farm. The project, which is slated to cost $1.4 billion, is gunning for 400MW which, it says, will make it the largest of its kind in the world (the current record holder is an 80MW solar plant in Ontario). Of course 400MW puts it almost exactly in the same ballpark as the San Antonio plans, so who gets to hold the record will presumably depend on how fast these things get built.

For its part, NSP says it is making its decision based on access to adequate and appropriate land; community and political support; availability of economic development and tax incentives, and an appropriately skilled workforce. Communities still in the running include Gadsden, Hardee, Osceola and Suwannee counties in Florida; Sumter and Tatnall counties in Georgia, and Guilford County in North Carolina.

I guess it will be interesting to see how long it takes before 400MW starts feeling small too.

I heard Solar Power is expensive when compared to Conventional forms of energy generation.

The solar power is fast moving from photovoltic cell technology to the generation of steam leading to power gereration.
This uses heating medium ( hot oils or heat salts ) to store solar energy, thus generating power in night also.
All the big projects/ commercial power plants are based on this technology.
Photovoltic are good for home, or point illumination.

Yes Mainly Initial erection cost and transmission line cost is costly thn Thermal and hydral energy. But it is eco friendly, need no fuel, Clean, Easy to handle ,

I don't get your statement as most of India's power needs comes from thermal power stations powered by Indian Coal followed by Dams and Nuclear Power.

Well many industries have captive power plants which burn diesel,
so more electricity can result in lower requirement to use diesel generators
