You are absolutely correct. Unfortunately rape has become another media sensation in India after that Delhi incident both in Indian media and international. There are many countries with much worse rape statistics than India, many of those countries are developed western countries but we hardly get to hear about it. It's a crime you can't completely get rid of, like murder. The media will continue to sell rape stories as long it brings them money/viewership.

There are Lies damn Lies, and Statistics.. if rape figures are higher in western countries, could it be because the crime is prosecuted more efficiently, women are more likely to report rapes, and some Police and justice officials are not as corrupt? Therefore higher apparent rape. Now I ask this question respectfully. Are ALL rape victims in India as willing to report? Is there not pressure on many to 'keep quiet'?,or police and officials not doing their job? Therefore the Rape statistics are artificially lower?

There are far too many instances to note here, stating a few here from the arrest of Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi and his humiliation in the media for months together in the murder of a temple official. When he was exonerated, there was hardly any coverage. Same with Swamy Nithyananda. The campaign they ran against him and his devotees for months on end, but in the end it ended with a wimper when all cases were dropped. No apologies, no retraction from the media. Then there is the case against Asaram, same shrill media witch hunt. All the focus is usually on Hindu gurus with enormous following.

When there are cases of rapes of nuns by priests in churches or by mullahs, and there have been plenty, the media quickly snuffs out the story.

The whole angle has been to project Hinduism as barbaric, primitive, not good enough for 21st century and that it is this culture which is birthing rapists. Most Indian are clueless that rapes happens elsewhere. If you were to go to the comment section of TOI or other newspapers, all the comments seem to be wallowing in self-loathing beating up themselves and blaming India and Indian culture for it. More often then not, they wont believe that anyone else in the world apart from Indians rape ever.

What more can be done? The rape laws have been modified to resemble something out of twilight zone. A woman just has to allege, and the man is in docks with unbailable warrant. Police have in every case stated caught the suspects. Most laws in India are heavily tilted in favor of women.

The issue with India is that the rapes that are being reported are of the really violent stranger rape, including gang rape.
India has a very strange rape phenomena that is probably found in very few countries in the world.

Not necessarily true. There are countries like South Africa who are no better than India, may be even worse if anything. India didn't suddenly become the rape capital after December 2012. Rapes were happening before that too, but rape news were geeting reported the way they get reported everywhere before that. After December 2012 it has become headline material.

That is a valid issue, but you missed the whole point of my post. I was pointing out how media is sensationalizing rape in India. Where else do you see rape cases in the headline? In that context your post about unreported cases is not relevant.

It happens here, several recent cases of false rape accusation by women- but the women have all been prosecuted for it. The men however have their lives ruined.

We see rape cases reported in the UK headlines quite often, so that comment is not relevant either . I was responding to your statement 'There are many countries with much worse rape statistics than India' . so it is in context.

That is why I said one of the few countries and not the only country in the world. Saying you are no worse than South Africa should be no consolation.

I find it strange that the instances of stranger rape, including gang rape, would be so high in a conservative culture called India.

Something is making these men do these things and the only possible explanation is that they feel completely alienated from society at large.

You seem to be taking this as a personal attack on your country- ie 'your rapes are worse than our rapes' Rape are BAD wherever they occur. I am not singling India out just trying to get some answers.

Indians are not willing to accept the real explanation for this crime - that it is due to low morality and poor law enforcement.

They do not understand, or are unwilling to, how much this is negatively affecting the image of their country

That is a true statement even after allowing a margin for unreported cases. There are definitely many countries with much worse "per person" statistics than India. You can't compare absolute numbers of a country of 1.2 billion people with that of a few million.
