Though not able to talk to uncle even now but I called on one helpline number and got info that all cellular as well as landline services are stuck down in majority areas of Chennai. No electricity since day before yesterday evening too.

PM Modi in Rain-Hit Chennai, Announces Immediate Relief of Rs 1000 Crore
Some important points from the above article.
1)CHENNAI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who made an aerial survey of Chennai today, announced relief of Rs. 1000 crore for Tamil Nadu, which, he said, will be released "immediately by the Centre". "This is over and above Rs. 940 crore which was released earlier," he said.
2)But despite the weather clearing up, water level has been rising in some areas as water was released periodically from the overflowing Chembarabakkam dam. The Adyar and Cooum rivers are swollen and 35 lakes are reportedly flowing at dangerous levels.
3)The city is facing a huge shortage of food and essential items like milk and water. A one-litre packet of milk is being sold for Rs. 100 in some places. A bottle of mineral water costing Rs. 20, is being sold for Rs. 150. Vegetables like tomato and beans are being sold for Rs. 80 to Rs. 90 a kg.
4)Terming the situation in flood-hit Chennai as "very alarming", Home Minister Rajnath Singh today said, "It would not be an exaggeration to say that Chennai has become an island as it has been cut off from all national and state highways".

Tamil Nadu floods: 269 dead in Tamil Nadu, 54 in Andhra Pradesh - The Hindu
The heaviest rains in Tamil Nadu in over a century and floods have left 269 people dead, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said on Thursday, describing the situation as “alarming”.

The minister also told the Lok Sabha that 54 people had been killed in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh and two in Puducherry.

HYDERABAD: Heavy rains continued to lash Chittoor, Nellore and other districts of Andhra Pradesh bordering Tamil Nadu, throwing normal life out of gear.

Low-lying areas were inundated and several rivulets were in spate in Nellore and Chittoor districts due to fresh spell of rains, triggered by a low pressure in the Bay of Bengal.

Chittoor, Nellore, Anantapur and Kadapa districts had received heavy downpour last month, which caused widespread damage to crops, property and also loss to human lives.

Officials had then said that 35 people were killed in the state in various rain-related incidents.

Noting that a loss of Rs. 3,000 crore has occurred due to heavy rains and floods as per preliminary estimates, Mr Naidu had said the final report would be sent after enumeration.

Chennai floods: Breach of Porur lake feared; rumours of crocodiles, zoo animals on the loose are false


A major scare has been doing the rounds for the last few days that crocodiles kept at the Madras Crocodile Bank Trust had broken out. However, the organisation has rubbished the claims.

"There have been no escapes. Please don't believe the rumours. All our crocs are accounted for. #safe #rumours," tweeted the trust, assuring that its staff was working round the clock to watch the animals.

  Despite the fact that Chennai has recorded its highest rainfall in 100 years, which so far has killed at least 190 people, the coverage especially in the national dailies has been minimal.
  
  
  
  One such Facebook post discussing the lack of coverage of the Chennai floods in the newspapers in the country has gone viral. The post by Sujith Kumar, a resident of Chennai, has captured the anger of news readers in the country.
  
  His Facebook post has been shared over 15,000 times on the last count.

  Dear National News Channels, people keep writing open letters every now and then to you folks and you must be used to it now. I am from the city of Chennai - which is the capital city of Tamilnadu in India.
  
  The moment I say Tamilnadu please don't mistake that Chennai is in Sri Lanka, it's very much part of our country about 300 km from Bangalore. Wanted to let you all know that it's been raining continously for the last 10 days and our local channels are mentioning that this rain is the highest recorded in 100 years.
  
  Several people have lost their lives and water is only flowing upto to neck level and hence it's really not serious. I switched on the TV today only to find news about how Congress and BJP is accusing each other for the ED raids, last week was all about Aamir Khan and Intolerance, then about this great lady who is accused of murdering her daughter etc...each of these news are of utmost national importance and floods/loss of lives are not significant.
  
  I have seen several times in the past when toll free numbers are set, relief materials collected by each of your channels etc but cannot see the word Chennai floods even in the breaking news section which in any case is breaking lot of news which are irrelevant. It's perfectly fine if you don't cover this news but for heaven sake don't call yourselves National News Channel by any means.
  
  Several Twitter users also have expressed their anger. Popular MTV presenter Nikhil Chinapa put a tweet post expressing his anger against the coverage on Chennai floods.

Did you watched news channels last couple of days??? I was stuck in chennai myself and spend lot of time watching them...... I can tell you, there was hardly any other news on those front line media..... News paper??? Not much idea, as i was not access to it......

The Indian newspapers concentrate on northern Indian news like Cow lynchings than on the southern Indian news like flooding in Chennai. South India is backwaters not really in the news only if there is a cow related news like Karnataka CM eating beef or Kerala beef eaters.

The whole nation has been kept abreast with Chennai, we have been seeing images of the depression in BoB over TN & Pondicherry all along.

We have also been aware of the plight of the Tamilians.

Having said that, I feel the media is focusing on it not because they love chennai or they think the flood is an important issue, I feel they covered it more because they did not have any other issue to brag...... These media houses work only for one thing...... Ie ; Money, and for them TRP is money......

I'm more worried about AP capital, CBN damaging Farming lands, forest and other natural resources for his own gain.. Ironically his official home in Vijayawada constructed illegally within Krishna river... he intend to construct mega city in 100000+acre land.... if the farmers refused to give land, his followers Lynching their crops....

South Chennai is the bastion of real estate mafia. They occupied lakes, lake banks and encroached on even lake bed effectively blocking path of the water. Both the major parties are allied with the real estate czars and keep sanctioning water connections to their cronies who occupy these areas. Even small time politicos have resorted to land grab here. I hope this will be the end of overpriced real estate in Chennai. The costs are on par with Mumbai/Bangalore but amenities nowhere close to any city like that. Half the apartments here survive on tanker water for daily uses round the year.

Chennai is historically a water starved city. People did not expect to see so much water in their lifetime in Chennai. I would say this is completely man made disaster. Nobody bothered to make the drains to their capacity. Even storm water drains(which are supposed to suck in every drop of water near them and into the river or sea) are overflowing pushing water onto the roads.

Same here in Bhubaneswar.....will suffer one day!!

Thank God you are safe...........My HO too is in Chennai........and its has been raining in Chennai for past 3 weeks.............and TV Coverage begin from 2nd December......after outrage over social media
