I have gone through this really amazing weapon system, developed by both US and Israel named THEL. The system fires a high laser beam, that can destroy the enemy's incoming missile or other kind of targets.

This suggests that, how much eager the US is, to develope a missile defence system. They are trying so many different things and this is one of them. If you have some thing interesting to share, or any further info on this thing, plz go ahead.

Actually funding for the THEL system was cut this year, but may be bought back in next year's budget. The Osprey went through similar funding problems. There is hope for this promising weapons system.

Can this thing have a capability to destroy missiles like the one N.K is going to test. Would be amazing then

Not sure why funding was cut, although it may have been to punish Israel over the Chinese technology transfer dispute, but that is over, and so funding might be restored at some point.

I am Canadian and have lived in Israel, and about half my family still does. It showed the pak flag in my profile as soon as I created the account. I just hadn't gotten around to changing it yet.

According to what we were told about this system by one of our Russian teachers in university,THEL is a high energy laser principle which states that its a space based system used to knock out Inter continental ballistic missiles even after they have attained the speed, i.e. even after the booster stage. this is the differnce between the missile defence shield and THEL. Missile defence shield principle operates on knocking out a missile before its booster stage. whereas THEL can simply lase the fuel store of the incoming missile even after the missile has attained its top speed. Here start the draw backs of this system which stopped soviets from pursuing it.

1.possibility. The system needs to be placed in the expected trajectory of the hostile projectile.You have to expect the enemy to fire it in that direction. (this means you have to sign an agreement as well with your enemy on firing the missiles in the favorable directions.

2.extent of damage. missile can only be knocked out if the lasing is for significant period of time and exactly at the fuel tank from short distances as diffraction affects intensity inversely.:wall:

3.costs. billions and billions of dollars would be needed from research to development of a single stand alone system.:idiot:

It can be used only once against threats as it consumes immense energy. russians tested it in early eighties but failed to cope up with it because of finances and lack of belief in its abilities.
