On 04 March 2025, opposition MPs detonated smoke grenades and threw tear gas during a session causing chaos in the Serbian parliament, the purpose of this spectacular protest was to draw attention to complaints about corruption and public safety issues while also demonstrating support for the ongoing student protests against the administration.
For several months, Serbian students have been leading protests in which they have criticized government corruption and demanded reforms, after a sad event in November 2024, when the roof of a train station collapsed in Novi Sad killing 15 people, the demonstrations gained speed. Widespread indignation about alleged corruption and a lack of regulatory control in building projects was triggered by this incident.
Opposition members rushed to the speaker's podium during the legislative session and clashed with security guards, they used tear gas and smoke grenades at the same time causing clouds of pink and black smoke to fill the chamber, one congressman apparently had a stroke while at least two others were hurt, banners demanding justice for those killed in the train station collapse and a countrywide strike were displayed by the opposition.
The opposition and demonstrators have increased their pressure on the government coalition, which is headed by the Serbian Progressive Party SNS, protesting students main demand, a measure to raise university financing, was on the government's agenda for the spring legislative session. But the addition of other subjects to the schedule infuriated the opposition, which resulted in the tumultuous scenes in parliament.
Videos of the tumultuous scenes are going viral and the incident has garnered international attention, deep-seated discontent with the government's handling of public safety and corruption issues is reflected in the domestic protests and legislative disruptions, to address these issues, protest organizers have scheduled a sizable event in Belgrade for March 15.
Administration of President Aleksandar Vucic faces serious difficulties as a result of the continuous protests and legislative disruptions, despite their dramatic nature, opposition strategies emphasize how urgent it is to confront issues of governance and corruption, government of Serbia must implement significant reforms while it manages these political conflicts in order to rebuild public confidence and maintain political stability.
