Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard said on Twitter Saturday that the United States is funding and arming Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State.

“If you or I gave money, weapons or support to al-Qaeda or ISIS, we would be thrown in jail. Why does our gov get a free pass on this?,” the congresswoman from Hawaii wrote. Gabbard is a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the House Committees on Foreign Affairs and Armed Services.

She introduced the Stop Arming Terrorists Act Thursday. While introducing the bill, Gabbard cited New York Times and Wall Street Journal articles that said the rebels the U.S. is supporting in Syria are allied with Al-Nusra, an Al-Qeada affiliate.

“The CIA has also been funneling weapons and money through Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Qatar and others who provide direct and indirect support to groups like ISIS and al-Qaeda,” Gabbard said. Gabbard’s claim is backed up by a speech former secretary of state Hillary Clinton delivered to Goldman Sachs. Clinton said Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates are funding Jihadists in Syria.

“This madness must end. We must stop arming terrorists,” Gabbard said. Her bill will prohibit any federal agency from supporting a terrorist group or funneling support through other countries that directly or indirectly support terrorists.

A few weeks ago Gabbard met with President-elect Donald Trump at Trump Tower. Her bill is co-sponsored by Trump ally California Rep. Dana Rohrabacher.

She said on CNN Friday that she’s glad that Trump’s “talking about ending our country’s interventionist regime change policies.”

Because they don't see a stable Syria under Assad to be in America's national interests?

This is all geopolitics. However I think that perhaps this time, the many-headed hydra (ISIS) is far too much for them to control.

those mofo's who took up arms for isis and the false feking promises made to them has only gotten around to becoming their own demise. the ones that nurtures and raised them along with the ones who opposed them are all busy destroying them!! there is a lesson in their

Under Republicans, i could see the US engagement with Middle East will slowly allign towards Iran and its interest than other war around...Whatever be the situation, Assad is going to stay long. But his sponsor might change.

Not for Iran, for their internal focus and it also lowers the temperature with Russia.

May be you are right....Slowly US will try to focus on its internal strength rather than getting into others affairs.

She is right.
She is also known as one of the most open, anti-Muslim bigots in Congress, which is her real motivation here and why she has teamed up with the likes of conspiracy theorist Rep. Dana Rohrabacher.

You might note her actual background...

IOW, she is not against supposed US funding of ISIS. She is opposed to US funding of anyone or anything.....Muslim.

I know that's the narrative on her. But, when I saw her on the Bill Maher show, she didn't take his bait on blindly criticizing Muslims or Islam. (You can find her interview with Maher online.)

As you may know, Bill Maher is on his anti-Islam and Anti-Muslims crusade. He tried to enlist her on his campaign but failed miserably.

Also, it's not just her, but the bill is a bi-partisan effort. Per her US(dot)gov house of rep page, here are the supporters:

Stephen Kinzer, a senior fellow at the Watson Institute for International Studies at Brown University, and award-winning author and journalist said, “The proposal to stop sending weapons to insurgents in Syria is based on the principle that pouring arms into a war zone only intensifies suffering and makes peace more difficult to achieve. Congress made a decision like this about the Nicaraguan contras during the 1980s. Aid to the contras was cut off by the Boland Amendment. The result was a peace process that finally brought an end to wars not only in Nicaragua, but also in El Salvador and Guatemala. This is the example we should be following. Cutting off arms shipments forces belligerents to negotiate. That is what we achieved in Nicaragua. It should be our goal in Syria as well.”

Donna Smith, Executive Director of Progressive Democrats of America said, "Progressive Democrats of America believes that it is fundamentally wrong for the United States to fund those groups or individuals aligned with al-Qaeda, Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, ISIS, or other terrorist/extremist organizations. The 'Stop Arming Terrorists' bill authored by Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, of Hawaii's 2nd Congressional District, would help bring an end to the human tragedy unfolding in Syria where the haunting eyes of the innocent children of Aleppo call on us all to stop supporting those who threaten and kill them with ferocious intention. War is war, and terrorism is terrorism whether waged by the state or from external forces. PDA supports this measure."

Alfred Marder, President of the U.S. Peace Council said, “The U.S. Peace Council is honored to endorse and support the ‘Stop Arming Terrorists Bill’ as a major contribution to peace. This legislation will serve to galvanize the anti-war movement and the opposition to regime change policies that characterize our present foreign policy.”

Background: The Stop Arming Terrorists bill prohibits U.S. government funds from being used to support al-Qaeda, ISIS or other terrorist groups. In the same way that Congress passed the Boland Amendment to prohibit the funding and support to CIA backed-Nicaraguan Contras during the 1980’s, this bill would stop CIA or other Federal government activities in places like Syria by ensuring U.S. funds are not used to support al-Qaeda, Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, ISIS, or other terrorist groups working with them. It would also prohibit the Federal government from funding assistance to countries that are directly or indirectly supporting those terrorist groups.

As you can see we have a long history of such covert operations.
