For some unknown reason.. Indians seems displeased!
Otherwise, not a bad move.

.
don't worry they too would be junk soon due to corruption in disel fuel and spares and by letting kotta enginniers to fix them……

Oh it is very easy:

Don't replace the engine oil during servicing and sell the new oil on the market. Adulterate the diesel fuel with water and used oil to make up the volume to sell the pilfered diesel. Don't replace filters and then poke holes or remove them when they get clogged. Damage or remove sealing gaskets due to lack of care.

Viola: Brand new engine destroyed in a short time.

We will need more engines soon. Let the next round of commissions begin!

. . .
us bro... but just 60 that mean just 30 trains... btw these engine are damn powerful. ....

Dude 1 locomotive = 1 train.... correct me if im wrong..

Anyways as cb4 pointed out ... the plan is dropped n now we will manufacture them locally.... at the risalpur factory.. which has been running into losses... producing only 100+ locomotives since 93(when it was set up with japanese assistance).... the factory is being converted into a modern state of the art locomotive manufacturing factory and is being lease to a private company...;)

It depends on the type of train and its load Sir. Some trains can be up to 3,000 meters long and have up to 7 locomotives, three at the front, and two in the middle and back, when carrying heavy goods over mountains.

.
But which types are we buying/making? Freight or passenger?

With the current slack in production and lower demand, passenger services should be increased to raise revenues for future development in rail networks.

Plan to import locomotives dropped

ISLAMABAD: The much-trumpeted project to purchase 150 locomotives from foreign companies this fiscal year has been abandoned, as Federal Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique has decided to manufacture new engines locally and repair the old ones to save the department from getting more loans.

Sources said on Friday that to save the department from getting more loans, Saad Rafique had decided not to procure foreign-made locomotives or other goods. The department already has to clear Rs70 billion liabilities against loans to different firms and donor agencies.

On the other hand, the department’s performance has deteriorated due to the worst financial crunch, making it unable to launch any big scheme in the last one decade to rehabilitate it.In view of this bad situation, the minister believes purchase of foreign-made locomotives will cost millions of dollars thus burdening the department with more loans.

To save the department’s position, Saad Rafique has directed cancellation of all agreements with foreign firms, including China and the US, for procurement of locomotives and other rail goods. Instead, he has ordered the authorities concerned to prepare over 58 locomotives at the local level to save money. An amount of Rs500 million has been sanctioned out of which Rs250 million has been released and work has been started on the project. The 58 locomotives will be manufactured at the carriage factories of different railway stations.

Mohammad Ali, Personal Secretary to Khawaja Saad Rafiq, confirmed that the old plan to procure 150 new locomotives from American firms had been dropped and work had been undertaken on the manufacture of 58 locomotives at the local level.

After completion of the project, the locally-made locomotives would be coupled with passenger trains plying different routes. Mohammad Ali was unable to reply how many freight trains would be made operational which was the major source of generating revenue. He said the decision would be taken after the manufacture of locomotives.

.
Why not they make audit of last minister?

Perhaps, some sort of understanding!

.
Pakistan should only buy from countries that agree to give Transfer of Technology. Period.

We should be making these babies at home.

Lets review the Sources Credibility:

Government to buy 58 diesel locomotives from American company | Business Recorder
Pakistan's top Financial / Economy reporter avenue

58 Locomotives deliveries in 1 Year , sounds reasonable plan and also inline with Pakistan Railway Minister's own words that in 1 year they will get Railways Operations.

It seems logical that US company would be able to deliver 58 Locomotives in Year
we only make 10 Locomotives / year in Rasulpur

There are plans to import 150 motors / parts for , repair or local , old engines that are unservicable

Pakistan Railways to repair 150 locomotives
The government has approved project “Special Repair of 150 Running locomotives” during 2012-13 under Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP). An official of Pakistan Railways talking to APP here on Monday said purchase of new locomotives was necessary for the revival of Railways and made it profit earning organization. He said that Ministry of Railways had already floated a tender for the purchase of 69 new locomotives in order to control deficit.

There is a difference , between purchase of new engines and repair of old engines

Railways to lease out locomotive factory
01 July, 2013

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Railways has decided to lease out its Risalpur factory to private sector to convert it into a modern, state-of-the-art locomotive manufacturing facility.

The main objective of the move is to manufacture 25 locomotives yearly for the Railways and to unitise any excess capacity for potential export opportunities, according to a project document made available to Our Sources.

Chinese company , was barred from proving locomotives as they had breakdown in last 50 delivered locomotives. This issue is in courts

The Railways spokesperson said on Friday that the minister Khawaja Saad Rafique was not satisfied with his performance and appointed Captain (Retd) Abdul Majeed as new director.
Saad Rafique has decided that no increase in Railways’ fare would be made despite an increase of petroleum prices. The minister said the decision had been taken for poor and destitute section that preferably travels via Railways all over the country.

but caterpillar is not exactly a charity org or is it?

I was just commenting on the wording of the title.

Looking forward to more junk in a couple of months, then hiring overpriced maintenance companies to repair the damage and finally ordering more.

Nice business cycle for those involved.

Ironically, it's the same mentality everywhere.

In Sydney, we complain about the public monopoly called CityRail (suburban transport) which is listed as one of the most expensive (to customers) rail systems in the world per mile traveled. The amount of waste, nepotism and sheer incompetence is amazing, yet nothing happens. In the US, I knew people working for defence contractors who bragged about a widespread culture of working maybe three hours/day.

Bottom line, government departments are the gravy train.
