The point was that expressions of sympathy from India need not automatically be dismissed as being insincere - there is a genuine affection between India and many of the people of NWFP.

Unfortunately, this seems to me to be wishful thinking - success in Swat valley does not mean the infrastructure of insurgency has been dismantled - for this to happen, the ideas that propel the insurgency will have to be tackled, the Masajids and Madaress that serve as recuriting and training centers for the insugency will have to be taken on, the ideas in society suggesting that it is noble and good, the in the name of, in support of so called "Muslim" causes will have to be challeneged, the sources of funding will have to be challenged publically - in other words, it's a large societal project, which no Pakistani politician, nor the populist media, has stomach for.
So Pakistan will have to suffer as it has been doing for perhaps more than a decade or two -- and when and if the ideas of the insurgency die, new ideas will be goven birth to, which may end up being even more dangerous.
A pessimistic picture? perhaps, but no smoke up the... it's the reality, better we sober up now.

Jana,
Do you honestly believe that if the USA were to leave Afghanistan, ASAP, that internal peace would return to Pakistan? Do you honestly believe that those who are funding, training and deploying these suicide bombers will be satisfied, will stand down, and Pakistan will then resume its march to fulfill Jinnah's vision?
P. S. (Could it be that the impetus for these acts comes from elsewhere than sympathy for the Afghans under the thumb of the Americans?)
