Canadian Air Force to Sell Chinook Helicopters

Canada intended to spend $4.7bn on 15 new Chinooks a few years ago. holy crap!

This amount makes a Chinook more then twice costlier than a F-22 raptor :smokin::smokin:.Just another reporting error from our dear reporters

actually you're right :woot:

even the choppers with spares won't cost that much

We still can't afford it though...

We can surely afford these 2nd hand choppers but the problem is not only buying these choppers rather after buying the cost of maintanance and infra-structure is the main problem .As we are already operating mi-17's and are having maintanance facilities for them so buying more mi-17's will be suitable

The CH-47 is one piece of hardware most desired by the Army..and the one piece of hardware the US refuses to talk about..
make a guess why...

a compound reason.. Americans dont see it fit that Pakistan's airborne capability gets a massive boost helping it in rapid deployment in COIN operations or in a traditional war theatre.
On a lighter note, the Obama administration would have less chance to repeat their favourite rhetoric of “do more” if Pakistan uses them to rapidly deploys troops blocking the possible entry/ exit routes of terrorists.

Secondly such sale also doesn’t suit our eastern neighbour which happens to be a bigger and strategic partner of USA.. So it is purely business nothing personal

For whatever reason or conditions American policy makers have agreed to approve some military related sale, these chinooks don’t fit in and are way too good for us. Looking at the diplomats shooting issue recently, one can see the futility of our “strategic friendship” with the USA where it is threatening with cutting off the military assistance and opening up the AQ Khan’s nuclear issue and all other issues that are normally played out by countries hostile towards Pakistan.

So we can watch but cant touch like myself when I saw this beast perform in Farnbough last year. It is very graceful and agile machine with some jaw dropping manoeuvres.

Agreed.

There was also a wikileak where Gen.Kayani was reported to have said that the Americans are constantly trying to sell military hardware to Pakistan that is either too expensive, difficult to maintain or is considered of little value to Pakistan's strategy.

This is sheer duplicity on their part. We were termed as a "Major Non-NATO Ally" and therefore get slightly better access to American tech. but what we've seen so far is American fear of upsetting India.

Obama turned out to be India's very own American President.

Turkey is ordering 6+8 CH-47F models including spare parts for $1.2 billion. The deal was signed last year around December and will take 36 months for delivery of the helicopters.
