Canada is deploying six CF-18 fighter jets to Eastern Europe as part of NATO’s response to the worsening crisis in Ukraine, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced Thursday.
Russian President Vladimir Putin warned Ukraine was on the brink of civil war, stoking fears of outright Russian intervention.
NATO has increased air sorties and additional navy ships in the region as Ukrainian and pro-Russian forces face off.
Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania — which border Russia and have sizeable ethnic Russian populations — have all sought reassurances, as have Ukraine’s neighbors Poland and Romania.
Harper condemned what he called “Russia’s illegal occupation of Ukraine and its ongoing aggressive military provocation.”
The Canadian leader said he is concerned about “expansionism on the part of Russia under the presidency of Mr. Putin.
“I believe this to be a long-term serious threat to global peace and security, and we’re always prepared to work with our allies in NATO and elsewhere to try and bring whatever stability we can to the situation.”
The United States has also sent fighter aircraft to the Baltic states and Poland, to bolster confidence in member countries once ruled by Moscow.

Germany also sends fighter jets and ground troops. It is our duty to show our small NATO members that the strong countries do stand for our promise and not leave them alone.

Its aimed at 'domestic consumption' than anything else. Whats next? - 3 Australian hornets to stop Russians? :D

No, it sends a signal to russia. Russias economy is already in trouble and reality is, russia is a 3rd grade regional power with no functional military. It has no modern equipment and a bad organized army. Putins little show in ukraine is actually an absolute show of weakness.

Polish F-16s, American F-15s add to that now Canadian F-18s.
Its a logistical nightmare.

rusty, infertile ones. You dont have balls when you attack weak neighbours, ruin your economy, isolate you hlobally that even china does not support you anymore.

Putin lost ukraine and he knows it. What you see here now is an absolute demonstration of weakness.

That is how you like to think Markus. The Russian project in Crimea has been an utter success (from their perspective). The bad news is for eastern Europe as it is not going to stop in Crimea, its only beginning. If Europeans really don't want another conflict at hand, the Germans need to re-arm themselves to avert this situation. If there is a balance of power in Europe a war would be unlikely.

Russia already secured the caucasus. They handled Georgia in 2008 and now Armenia is going to join their customs union. Russias next Target is Eastern Ukraine, then Transdniestria. Russia has also stated that it is concerned for Russians in Estonia so I believe that Estonia is on the hit list aswell.

I remember in 2011 there were two F-16 s in Lithuanian , fielded by US . They used to fly every time Russians cross the air space. Hope this makes Eastern EU feel secured. Though i don't think Russia has any plan to invade .
