Norway is the so called civilized and developed country but the recent children custody issue exposed a ugly face of this advanced country where a toddler was snatched from his parents and put in child care dept.Drugs/Abuse/Pedos/Broken Families is not a uncommon thing there.

I think its stupid to find conspiracies in the religion of one person who was interviewed to dismiss the report. The Report was based on a poll done by Trustlaw Women and the results are based on "370 gender experts from five continents"

The areas that the countries are graded on are
Workplace opportunities
Access to resources
Participation in politics
Quality of health
Freedom from violence
Freedom from trafficking and slavery
and then an Overall score

All of the above are then combined with equal weightage to get the final rankings

From the results, India really gets hit hard on Health, Freedom from violence and Freedom from trafficking and slavery and was just 2nd to last on Workplace oppurtunities and Access to resources just above Saudi Arabia. The political participation was better although still in the bottom 5

For India, we need to work on improving women's health care significantly, this would be the single biggest gainer for India.

We also have to tackle violent crimes against women. And this includes by women themselves. And this has to start with our younger generation as well. I mean it is shocking that a survey of adolesncets in India by the UN found more than 50% justified wife beating by the husband if she "misbehaved" (57% of boys, 53% of girls think wife beating is justified - Times Of India)
We need better laws against trafficking as well which usually results in prostitution or bonded labour.

The other step is to improve women work participation ratio and education and there are already some schemes in place for that.

I am sure that if Pakistan was included, then it would be at the bottom on all. And Saudi Arabia is the last or 2nd last in all indicators except Health. So they have to make improvements across the board.

But should we be comparing ourselves with Pakistan and Saudi Arabia and be happy? That would be the wrong way to look at it.
