Amazon already have presence in India under the name junglee.com

India forbids foreign retailers like Amazon.com to engage in any sort of online e-commerce activity. Junglee.com cannot sell anything directly to consumer and has to redirected to seller sites to complete the purchase.

Analysts expect India to reform e-commerce laws in next year or so, and Amazon will be one of the first to enter Indian markets. There are so many e-commerce ventures in India that have mushroomed in last 3 years, and most have their objective is to be acquired by Amazon once Amazon enters India.

When commenting on FDI in retail, Politicians of all parties and the media etc are all talking endlessly only about
(1) loss of employment of small traders because of competition from organized retail companies and (2)flooding the markets by Chinese goods.

but

(1) FDI or not WE ALREADY HAVE ORGANIZED RETAIL IN INDIA. And these big retail chains are already expanding to smaller towns.
(2) Our markets are already flooded with Chinese goods and Indian retail chains also buy goods from China.

So IMO these two points are nonsense. I suspect if we are missing something here. Are they trying to divert the debate from some other important real threat by talking nonsense? what is the catch?

New Delhi, Sep 21 (IANS) The government Friday claimed that foreign direct investment (FDI) will help create over 1 crore (10 million) new jobs in the retail sector and benefit consumers and farmers.
In a full-page advertisement in leading newspapers, the commerce and industry ministry said it was just a myth that FDI in multi-brand retail would result in job losses.
"Contrary to this mistaken belief, FDI in multi-brand retail will generate new employment opportunities, resulting in 1 crore new jobs," it said.
In the advertisement, the government claimed that due to FDI in retail, "farmers will receive better remuneration for their product and will benefit from additional job opportunities resulting in overall improvement in their quality of life".
The government's decision to allow FDI in multi-brand retail has resulted in political turmoil in the country with a key ally Trinamool Congress pulling out of the ruling United Progressive Alliance and opposition parties, both from political right and left, demanding a rollback.
Shrugging off the protests, the government Thursday notified the decision to allow up to 51 percent FDI in multi-brand retail and hiked the limit of overseas investments in single-brand retail to 100 percent.

Exaggerated, but there certainly will be plenty of employment opportunities as well as streamlining of supply chains. the cultivators could become the biggest benefactors.
