The European Union (EU) is a political and economic community of twenty-seven member states with supranational and intergovernmental features, located primarily in Europe. It traces its origins to the European Economic Community (EEC) formed in 1957 by the Treaty of Rome among six European countries. Since then the EU has grown in size through the accession of new member states and has increased its powers by the addition of new policy areas to its remit. In 1993, the Maastricht Treaty established the current legal framework. The Lisbon Treaty signed in December 2007 initiates a ratification process in 2008 and is amending the existing treaties. It is intended to come into force on 1 January 2009.

The EU creates a single market by a system of laws which apply in all member states, guaranteeing the freedom of movement of people, goods, services and capital.[3] It maintains a common trade policy, agricultural and fisheries policies, and a regional development policy.[4] In 1999 the EU introduced a common currency, the euro, which has been adopted by fifteen member states. It has also developed a role in foreign policy, and in justice and home affairs. Passport control between many member states has been abolished under the Schengen Agreement.[5]

With almost 500 million citizens, the EU generates an estimated 31% share of the world's nominal GDP (US$16.6 trillion) in 2007.[2] It represents its members in the WTO and observes at G8 summits and at the UN. Twenty-one EU countries are members of NATO. Important institutions of the EU include the European Commission, the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union, the European Council, the European Court of Justice and the European Central Bank. EU citizens elect the Parliament every five years.

Why not?

Always feasible.

It will do Pakistan better than it would to Bangladesh.

Bangladesh can always benefit from the trade with Pakistan.

Dear Salaman

Yes, now it can be possible only with fresh and honest entrepreneurship, sound political dialogues.U know there r so many factors to be accorded.

.
It is a rather airy idea.

No economic union can be truly successful in south asia without the inclusion of India.

U have to remember that Bangladesh is ahead in some categories like in education, sanitation, democracy, mass people awarness. So, we are not leg behind. For example, our literacy rate is 70% now.

Bangladesh and Pakistan can do better only when India is out of there. But can it be possible?

.
.

Why not? Would u explain?

Because an economic union, without the inclusion of the biggest economy in the subcontinent would be self-defeating.

You'd might as well sign a free trade agreement with Pakistan and be done with it

The idea of a 'muslim block' doesn't make much economic sense.

What does ideology have to do with economics? Nothing much.

If its a political block, then perhaps it makes better sense. But by doing so, you would be alienating India, which again is not a very wise move.

it is possible indeed.the only problem we have is we dont have any direct link to join us so this limitation can be eliminated with an agreement with China and Burma to provide space for land communication.

alienating your worst enemy in such cooperation is necessary.specially when you have potential.

Actually Islam is not only a religion it is a complete code of life so we cant put Islam away from our state and economic matters.

I think in the present climate of confidence building between Pakistan and India, it would be unwise to do this.

And Bangladesh , India are definitely not "worst enemies". There might be some border issues and immigration problems, but nothing that cannot be sorted out.

India is a bigger economy itself but Pakistan and Bangladesh can become big economies so it is better not to include a bigger economy coz it will just eat you.
