nope without the U.S NATO is pointless
Not being argumentative but in my opinion, NATO is pretty much pointless, without a Soviet Union.
if we were to pull out of NATO we would have to work with Russia to secure a long peace deal. no NATO means no threat to threat to Russia.
We have little threat
from Russia, except the one we have helped to create. Today's Russia is not the Soviet Union. It not only has no ideology that it is aggressively exporting, it's values today are traditionalist and Christian and critical of the West's radical secularization and materialism. I agree with the Russians to a large extent, on those counts. Putin, (as much as we Americans just
love turning every potential enemy into Hitler and every situation into a "Munich Agreement" appeasement.), is no Hitler, or Stalin, or even a Brezhnev. He certainly is an autocrat and I have no doubt, as to the corruption of his state, but even if one were to take at face value, everyone of the horrible things he is accused of, he would still be one of the most benevolent dictators in history. There are no mass killings or genocides. No "death camp" Gulags in Siberia. Russians can come and go without any real restrictions. They can own property, work in jobs that they wish, worship as they wish, live how they wish, get pretty much any media from outside sources, etc. Russia has no desire to invade western Europe and little desire to interfere in eastern Europe except where ethnic Russians are a significant population. They do want to advance further into the Arctic, (bumping up against America on the other side.) and I have no illusions that Russian interests and American or western European interests, will always have conflicts of one kind or another but it's ridiculous to keep maintaining NATO's Cold War posture when that war has long since ended, and was won by the West at that. As an American, I feel great admiration for Russia and think we have more in common cause with her people than we have differences.
