Rahul Gandhi may not be the right person to lead the country, Kanchi Kamakoti Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi has said while backing BJP's Narendra Modi for the top job, raking up controversy over the foreign origin of ongress chief Sonia Gandhi.

In an exclusive interview with ET NOW , the seer raised objections to the Nehru-Gandhi scion due to his mother's Italian parentage, an issue BJP raised unsuccessfully during 2004 polls.

Supporting Modi's PM bid, the Shankaracharya said, "Narendra Modi is a man of great qualities. Considering that everyone else in the system is bad and dirty, Modi is a suitable candidate, and he has my blessings."

The remarks have come at a time BJP is seeking to turn the next elections into a direct contest between Modi and Rahul Gandhi, and the Gujarat CM appears to be falling back on his party's Hindutva pitch to firm up his appeal. While Modi is expected to be named BJP's PM candidate, the Congress has resisted demands to project Rahul as its candidate.

The seer slammed Congress for what he said was an attempt to play the communal card in the name of secularism. "Everything should be done in a dharmik manner. Trying to get Muslim and Christian votes in the name of secularism is wrong. Everyone should believe in their faith and work together to get God's blessings," he said.

The Shankaracharya lavished praised on former prime ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, saying it was unfortunate the country lost them prematurely.

I was asking because yesterday i read an Article of shashi tharoor in IE. It looked quite gloomy and defensive.




Also an Important question. If Congress win's this time, would it follow some economic policies of UPA 2 (NAC made) or would it change it in favor of liberalism in wake of Economic crisis.

Change is the need of the day but political compulsions prevent the govt from doing so . hopefully the next election will give a good majority to some party which can resurrect the economy . i dont care even if its the bjp but the economy is most important thing there is today.

Things in India are not as cut and dried as you state. religious and cultural tolerance is probably the best depicted by the society of India. even the people in the US are a lot more intolerant of cultures which are alien to them , a place where ever one is equal.

one of the reasons is that we accept the some people do not share our point of view. (i do not agree with it ) but as its in our Constitution no one can question it. at least till the Constitution is changed itsself.

The Uniform Civil Code is part of directive principles of state policy of the constitution and congress has done a great injustice to the constitution by abandoning it.

Wasn't trying to convince anyone. i know some people here believe they are influencing people (trying to sway the vote for modi)
but i know the election is fought on the ground . its there that i fight.

Minuscule is the word i will use. one because people in general are not swayed by media campaigns .second those who are on the net rarely go and vote.

Having done some research into the background of the Indian constitution, I wanted to see what excuse folks have in not having Uniform laws or not being able to refine the Muslim Personal Law. But that is fine with me.

Modi will become PM only if BJP gets 200 seat on its own, else Shushma/Jetli or other will become PM. My personal view is BJP will not get 200 Seats...

What is the Issue: The corrupt UPA must leave us in peace. UPA should go to hell. The corrupt leaders should get hanged till death.
What is the plan: Get the vote in name of Modi, Gather as much seat as possible. The PM will be decided later. The first priority shall be to kill the devil UPA.

The Pope was personally found guilty of embezeling funds for the drug mafia ........still no one dare arrest him. Christian priests are ruitinly accused of raping minors ....non of them go to jail.

Shame on you for propagating such lies ............Congress is truly the most Anti-Hindu party in the world.
