I am hearing a lot recently that India is considering blocking Pakistan's flow of water which it receives through rivers originating in the north.

Now is this just another empty Indian threat or should Pakistan be worried?

If they do in fact "block" the water, what can Pakistan do?

.
Yes, we can indeed hold the water when the situation is favorable. Otherwise where we will take the blocked water. It will flood the surroundings. Wait for summer for your answer.

India will, it is only a matter of time. When water crisis hits, India will prefer to help its own people rather than its neighbors. That can be now or 5 years down the line. But it is happening.

.
How would India "Block" the water exactly?

. .
They can but that will be against Treaty signed , which can make UN intervene and sanction India , Plus India can't hold water for long time as they have to release at one point causing floods , which occur each year cause our Govt havent built any new dams in last 30 years

India can very well do with a little bit of preparations like constructing canals and other infra to divert waters but whether it will do it or not is another question......

Don't worry no one is going to stop water.

Probably by diverting to reservoirs or by creating alternate routes for water.

See what happened to Aral sea after Soviets diverted water for irrigation

If India blocks the Indus water then it would infuriate China since Indus flows from China NOT only that but Brahmaputra also flows from China to India.

So China would block India's water flowing from China  India would be playing with fire if it blocks Pakistani water.

But we shouldn't expect any good gesture from India and prepare for the worst ..

No doubt there but neither Indus nor Brahmaputra are life lines of India. Besides Brahmaputra get 70% water from Indian tributaries within India itself so if anyone, Its BD which will be affected most and Pakistan in case of Indus.

Indus starts from Tibet,China and its in Pak where tributaries join from the 3 great ranges and it becomes a great river..

Blocking water is an act of war, we call ourselves muslims but don't act as one, as muslims, I think we should remember Jung e Siffin when Muawiya blocked water and Ali Ibn Abi Talib went in.

At Siffin, Muawiya had stationed his general, Abul Awr, with 10,000 men on the river to stop the access to water for Imam Ali's (A.S.) army. Imam Ali (A.S.) sent Sasaa Bin Sauhan al-Abdi to Muawiya that this action was not necessary because, after all, the people whom he was refusing water were also Muslims.

He further assured Muawiya that if the situation had been reversed, the river would have been open to both armies. However, Muawiya sent back a message that the murderers of Uthman had not allowed him any water when they had laid siege to his palace, and Muawiya was avenging that action.

Imam Ali (A.S.) knew that this situation would be intolerable and he launched an attack under Malike Ashtar. The brave commander secured the river after heavy fighting and Abul Awr was dislodged from its banks. Having control of the river, Imam Ali (A.S.) kept to his word and allowed unlimited access to Muawiya's side.
