Can Ghani and Modi stop the Taliban’s perpetual-motion war machine?

This much is clear: the new news from Afghanistan is not good. Three of Afghanistan’s 34 provincial capitals—Tarin Kot in Uruzgan, Lashkar Gah in Helmand, and Kunduz—are under direct Taliban siege. The Government admits nine districts of the country’s 398—Now Zad, Musa Qala, Bagran, and Dishu in Helmand; Warduj and Yamgan in Badakhshan; Kohistanat district in Sar-i Pul; Nawa in Ghazni; and Khak Afghan in Zabul. Forty more, it says, are “heavily contested”.

...

President Ghani and Prime Minister Modi know the big problem here is Pakistan. For years now, Afghan leaders have been demanding Pakistan crack down on the Taliban, who operate with impunity from its cities. The much-vaunted Afghanistan-India-United States diplomatic axis is among a number of efforts meant to push Pakistan in that direction.

There’s good reason to suspect, though, that this high-diplomatic manoeuvring will amount to nothing. Islamabad has refused to act against the Taliban because it is in its best interests not to do so. Pakistan’s military sees the Taliban as allies who protect the country from its affiliates and partners, notably al-Qaeda, and some factions of the Tehreek-e-Taliban.

United States of America diplomats have become increasingly frustrated with Pakistan’s conduct—but there’s no stomach in Washington for actions that would punish the Pakistani state for its complicity with terror. No one wants to risk weakening a state with nuclear weapons: hideous as the status-quo is, western leaders see it as preferable to all the other options.

...

The long war that began on 9/11, it appears likely, is certain to remain mired in stalemate for many years to come—only this stalemate is not still, its relentless march fuelled each day by human blood.

Ashraf Ghani rise to power and getting "elected" was totally dependant on Pakistan. It's another thing that like karzai he has gone to dogs. I actually blame Pakistan, country of my birth and motherland, who supported this moron. :)

Its a last resort argument when nothing left to argue by the troll, will bring the question of loyalty. It's not the first time you have bring in "loyality". You should be asking the question to yourself. Where your own loyality lies, with those who are fighting for liberation of your country from forigen military presence or with those who are assisting and facilitating forigen hold on your country affairs. :)

I consider you a troll of highest order and won't shy away trolling you if you wish to go down this path. :)

Afghans have been blaming Pakistan for the last 70 years. It's nothing new. The only change here is that India is now a firm backer, which is a pretty steep downgrade from the United States and NATO. Won't succeed.

I think the topic is about Afghan Taliban

No, the topic we're talking about is your allegations that there are Punjabi brigades in Kunduz.

Govt- in exile inside Pakistan-

Same 'gov't in exile' has an embassy in Qatar (at the behest of the US and Afghanistan itself). Delegates regularly travel to China, Scandinavia and Afghanistan itself.

Afghanistan current government sabotage the the peace process that conducted by Pakistan establishment, pakistan showed there efforts but news of shahdat of ameer mullah omer ruined the process
If Afghanistan is serious then he need to talk seriously with Pakistan involving India or other is useless
China America afg and Pakistan and Talibans can start the peace process but need serious behaviour from Afghanistan and second problem will be if Talibans get angry !
Rest war will only make Afghanistan weaker and a afgans will never rule over Talibans

This time around People of Afghanistan know Pakistani designs and the destruction, backwardness caused by taliban regime.
U becomes general here but don't no the facts sir
Talibans are un controllable they don't take dictations from anyone Pakistan had relations with them on Soviets time so Americans

.
If ever Taliban takes over Afghanistan, terrorists will gain shelter again. There will be an attack on US again with Pakistani collusion this time. Both these countries will be bombed to stone age after that.

The problem is Taliban enjoys huge public support from people of different provinces specially Helmand, nanghar And other pushtoon belt. You have to understand the ground realities rather then emotion. Also you have to understand the complex tribal system of the pushtoon. And according to that system the pushtoons have always resisted the invading forces be that British, Alexander the great, Arabs, Mongols, Soviets and USA. I just hope Indian name is not added in that list

You should read the OP which decides the topic- And there is documented proof of Punjabi and Urdu speakers fighting for Taliban in Kunduz- back in 2001 Pakistan Army had to evacuate Its Generals and top Taliban leadership by a C-130- That too is well documented fact-

That doesn't change the fact that the Taliban Govt- runs in exile inside Pakistan in the first place- Delegates comes as secondary there won't be one If there isn't a Govt- in first place-
