Can Bangladesh overtake Pakistan's economy in size?

The IMF estimates for Pak are based off 2.1% Growth rate since 2008-09.

Pakistan had already expanded to almost 300Billion dollars GDP by this year june.It is very much possible to reach 550Billion dollars by 2018-19.While BD will merely reach 200Billion dollars by 2018

. .
In terms of GDP/capita, BD looks set to surpass Pakistan by the latter half of this decade.

Overall GDP will take a bit longer as Pakistan has a population that is now
30 million larger.

@karan21 : BD does have shipbuilding, pharmaceuticals, IT and electronics industries that are currently expanding. While garments cannot propel BD forever, it is useful to provide revenue for further development while the other industries develop.
bd can grow faster than India easily, because its small and manageble size. The main issues are poor infrastucture and political violence. You guys need to calm down a bit. :)

And what part of your brain did you engage to come with this nonsense?

Bangladesh should be able to approach middle income country status by around 2020. We should keep our population stable, our Islamic nut cases in check, to achieve this. Bangladesh has achieved growth of around 6% or more despite not attracting much foreign investment, but things are changing. As the world economy recovers I think we should be able to notch up 8% growth for a few years.

It is BDs confrontational politics that is the main reason why BD is not at double-digit growth now.

Still 6% a year GDP growth is not bad and that is around twice that of Pakistan when GDP/capita is taken into account.

No offence to either Pakistan or India but BD has its sights set on Sri Lanka to try to replicate as a model, but its political system is not mature enough yet.

A lot of Bangladeshis I've come across are secular and irreligious. This I believe is a big advantage that Bangladesh has over ultra conservative religious theocracies. So, the fundamentals are there. If education is made a priority Bangladesh will flourish like none other. India must help countries like Bangladesh/Sri Lanka/Nepal prosper so that South Asia can be turned into an education and technology hub in the future.

I do not believe either Pakistan or BD is trying to compete with each other. Each has own plans, factors, assets and liabilities. Important thing is for each to excel as best as possible.

Unlike Pakistan, which gets a helping hand from India and Iran, Bangladesh has managed to grow on its own. Pakistan is also blessed with a lot of natural resources, and it also receives huge amount of aid from the US.

Helping hand from India yeah right in the form of proxy wars and terrorism. Your country is one fine example of that helping hand.

When has Bangladesh ever reached 8% growth rate? I think you are day dreaming. Bangladesh is going to take a big hit economically if Bangladesh keeps on annoying the Americans and the Europeans. I do not see Bangladesh over taking the Pakistan economy unless it becomes independent from the Indian economy. There is certainly the potential for Bangladesh to surpass Pakistan but we do not have the political leadership or foresight to achieve that.
