Vienna, 14th April 2008 – On 16th March the CAMCOPTER® S-100 UAV System successfully completed flights from a Type 21 Frigate of the Pakistan Navy in the Arabian Sea.

As part of a series of shipboard flight tests, Schiebel’s unmanned VTOL UAV System CAMCOPTER® S-100 recently again demonstrated its unrivalled shipboard launch and recovery capabilities from a Pakistan Navy Frigate.

Launch was made from the heli deck of the Type 21 Frigate at the designated trial site off the coast of Karachi. Equipped with a day/night-capable EOIR gimbal, the S-100's takeoffs were done both manually and autonomously from the deck. Landings generally are flown autonomously to a waypoint relative to the ship and at a distance of about 50 feet above and 100 feet behind the ship’s heli deck. From this waypoint the final approach and landings were executed.

The weather conditions allowed takeoffs and landings at a maximum ship speed of 13 knots and the Frigate’s speed at no time less than 10 knots, with wind from West-Southwest at up to 15 knots at moderate Sea State.

After a first system check day flight, a 4-hour mission was carried out where the CAMCOPTER® S-100 took off from the ship's heli deck by day and landed at night. The tests were concluded by another night flight with a total flight time that day of about 6 hours at a maximum altitude of 6000 ft.

During all flights, the CAMCOPTER® S-100 successfully completed all given reconnaissance tasks, which included location of objects at sea and at land. The exact location of the detected objects and their characteristics were also successfully communicated by the team.

The subject shipboard trials were held in coordination with the Pakistan Navy and Schiebel's local partners in Pakistan.

Its AV fuselage is a carbon fiber monocoque providing maximum capacity for a wide range of payload/endurance combinations. In a standard configuration, the AV is capable of carrying a 55 lbs payload for up to 6 hours.

NO Way I had no idea that pakistan was going for such sophisticated hardwear. But before I get carried away. Does Pakistan have this UAV?

We are moving more and more towards network centric warfare, real time intelligence is the key to success in modern warfare and it is finally good to hear the armed forces of pakistan are finally acquiring these capabilities.

True! however the point i was trying to make was that the armed forces are going into the right direction. We need to be highly network centric and able to mobilize with real time intelligence gathering capability inorder to face the multifacedthreats of the future.

I compeletly agree with you IceCold. Maybe with in the next 5 years UAVs will be the ones guiding anti ship missiles by laser or something which will really give Pakistan an edge over an agressors and even give pakistan the ability to seek out any smugglers by sea that might be trying to cause us harm. I think that is where the true potential lies with this aircraft.

why the 5 year time-line? why not earlier!

Simple if you read the article its evident that a demonstration has been offered to the PN as technology demonstration. Normally in any armed forces the procedure will be as follows.

1. Demonstration. (India has also evaluated the same model)
2. Demo Report and Recommendations.
3. Approval of Report and forwarding of the same to HQ in Islamabad.
4. More study and then preperation of Statement of case.
5. HQ may ask for demo from other suppliers.
6. Preperation of staff requirements and its approval.
7. Tender
8. Field trials of all technically qualified vendors.
9. Opening of Price Bids.
10. Negotiations with the winner.
11. Approval of order. (while the looser companies will be lobbying to get it re-tendered)
12. Delivery.
13. Induction.

Things would have moved faster if the Army was in power but now with a democracy and dirty politicians and arms dealers, things will move slowly. However the Cam Copter induction for any navy is good.

On 4th October 2007 Schiebel’s CAMCOPTER® S-100 UAV System successfully completed a series of flights from an Offshore Patrol Vessel of the Indian Navy in the Arabian Sea. Another big step has been taken in the growth of Schiebel’s CAMCOPTER® S-100 Unmanned Air System into new roles. Beginning of October the unmanned helicopter S-100 demonstrated its shipboard capability, completing flights from a ship’s helipad in the Arabian Sea, for the Indian Navy based in Cochin, Kerala (South India). Takeoffs from the deck were done both manually and autonomously. Landings generally were flown autonomously to a waypoint relative to the ship at a distance of about 50 feet above and 100 feet behind the helipad and from this waypoint the final approach and landing were executed.he weather conditions allowed takeoffs and landings at ship speeds between 8 kts and 16 kts with wind from northwest at up to 20 kts at light to moderate sea states. The longest flight was two hours, demonstrating the CAMCOPTER® S-100´s capability to conduct reconnaissance at 12.000 ft altitude at 25 nm distance from the moving ship. The payloads installed onboard the CAMCOPTER® S-100 were an electro optical gimbal and the fixed camera in the nose which sent simultaneously video to the payload workstation. Other sensor payloads that are typically required for operational scenarios are available too, including SAR systems.

The Ground Control Station of the CAMCOPTER® S-100 UAS was installed inside the ship’s hangar with the link antennas set up at the structures on top of the hangar. An IMU (Inertial Measuring Unit) for sensing the ship movements for automatic landing and the GPS reference antenna were positioned next to the helipad.

The activity has been organized and executed in close cooperation with Vectra Aviation, a premier offshore helicopter service provider and Schiebel’s partner in India.
