Cambodian former King Norodom Sinahouk dies at age of 90 in Beijing

Because China encouraged Khmer´s Cambodia to attack Vietnam along the common border between 1975 and 1977. You even sent military advisers to Cambodia. Without this assistance Cambodia never dared to launch war against us.

They all deserved a place in the hell.

What is that got to do with us calling him a friend? do we need vietnam permission to call some one a friend?

PHNOM PENH - The body of revered former Cambodian king Norodom Sihanouk, who died in Beijing aged 89 on Monday, will go on display in Phnom Penh for three months before a lavish state funeral, an official said.

The body is set to arrive in the Cambodian capital on Wednesday afternoon and a mourning period will last until October 21, government spokesman Khieu Kanharith told AFP.

"(The) funeral will be three months later," he said, explaining that it would give Cambodians a chance to pay their respects to the beloved monarch, whose life encompassed turbulent years of rule, exile, conflict and tragedy, including the Khmer Rouge reign of terror.

The decision was made at a high-level meeting in Phnom Penh, hours after news broke that the royal had died early Monday at a Beijing hospital following a heart attack.

Cambodia's current King Norodom Sihamoni, who ascended the throne after his father Sihanouk abruptly abdicated in 2004, and Prime Minister Hun Sen have flown to Beijing to collect the body.

Khieu Kanharith said he believed around a hundred thousand people would line the streets of the capital on Wednesday to mark Sihanouk's final return to Phnom Penh after spending the last 10 months in China undergoing medical treatment.

Sihanouk's long-time assistant Prince Sisowath Thomico said he too expected a large outpouring of grief for the charismatic royal in Phnom Penh, where flags were already flying at half-mast on Monday.

"We can expect many people along the streets when the body returns," he told AFP.

He said plans to put the body on display were in line with Cambodian practice.

"It's according to the tradition of the Cambodian royal family," he told AFP, adding that the same procedure was followed when Sihanouk's father, then King Norodom Suramarit, passed away in 1960.

Norodom Sihanouk, Cambodia's enigmatic former king

PHNOM PENH: Behind the image of an eccentric monarch who moved with the political tides, former king Norodom Sihanouk, who has died aged 89, never stopped trying to preserve the unity of war-ravaged Cambodia.

Twice exiled and twice returned to the throne during a life almost as tempestuous as his country's history, Sihanouk abruptly abdicated in 2004, as old age and poor health took their toll on the colourful monarch.

But it was far from the first time the royal's unpredictability caught observers off guard, after he repeatedly backed different regimes, including the murderous Khmer Rouge.

"Sihanouk is Cambodia," his official biographer, Julio Jeldres, once said of the former king.

He had been plagued by poor health in the final years of his life, including cancer and diabetes, and frequently spent long spells being treated in China, where he died early Monday.

A self-described "naughty boy" with a taste for life's pleasures and an artistic flair, Sihanouk embraced the intrigue that swirled around his kingdom with the gusto of a character from one of the dozens of films he made.

The playboy-monarch married six times and fathered 14 children. Aside from his cinematic creations, he also wrote poetry and composed songs.

But Sihanouk was far from frivolous, emerging as a shrewd survivor who caught friend and foe alike off guard with charm and political wit.

A boy of just 18 when placed on the throne in 1941 by French colonial authorities, Sihanouk quickly defied his patron's expectations for a pliant king.

Twelve years later, he gained Cambodia's independence and shortly after quit the throne in favour of his father Prince Norodom Suramarit to pursue a career in politics.

He served as premier half a dozen times, repeatedly leaving the post with a characteristic flash of angry theatre over perceived slights, until finally becoming "head of state" following the death of his father in 1960. In the decade that followed, he presided over a period of rare stability, helping to forge a modern nation.

His frequent public appearances -- Sihanouk seemed to relish working alongside rural villagers on various public works projects -- formed in the minds of his people an unbreakable bond between the man and the country he reigned over.

A good king loved and respected by his people but unfortunately, because the war and the politic of the time, his benevolences didn't reach his people. Amen.

Norodom Sihanouk and China: a lifelong alliance

BEIJING -- Through decades of turmoil at home, former Cambodian monarch Norodom Sihanouk enjoyed vital political and medical succor from China, a staunch ally that provided the mercurial leader with a second home.

For more than 40 years, Sihanouk had at his disposal a stately and luxurious residence in the heart of Beijing, a grey-walled complex just a short distance from Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City.

The historic residence — the French embassy in the early 1900s, it was put at his disposal in 1970 by China's late Premier Zhou Enlai — is a stone's-throw from the hospital where he died on Monday.

The relationship between Sihanouk and his Chinese hosts was often rocky as China simultaneously supported the radical Khmer Rouge, Sihanouk's on-again, off-again allies.

But the late Cambodian so-called “father-king” praised the Beijing doctors who sustained him physically and the Chinese Communist state that propped him up politically through dark times.

“Long live the fraternal and indestructible friendship uniting the kingdom of Cambodia and the glorious People's Republic of China!” he wrote in 2009 on his website which he maintained until just recently.

The Cambodia monarch had received regular medical treatment in Beijing since being diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1994.

During his extended stays in the city, he often offered biting commentary on Cambodia's fractious politics, decrying nepotism, corruption, the abuse of the “little people” and the pillaging of natural resources.

He maintained a long friendship with China's communist leaders Mao Zedong and Zhou, whom he met at the Bandung Conference of non-aligned nations in Indonesia in 1955.

“I've always considered China as my second homeland ... only China has supported us, the Khmer resistance, the Soviet Union does not want us,” he said in 1971.

China repaid the praise on Monday in offering condolences over his death.

PHNOM PENH, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Around 100,000 Cambodian people will flank the road from the Phnom Penh International Airport to the Royal Palace to solute the return of former King Norodom Sihanouk's body on Wednesday afternoon, Phnom Penh Governor Kep Chuk Tema said Tuesday.

"They will line up along road sides from the airport to the Royal Palace in order to receive the King-Father's body from Beijing," he told reporters.

Sihanouk died early Monday due to natural causes at the age of 90 in China's Beijing Hospital, according to the Cambodian government.

He suffered from various forms of cancer, diabetes and hypertension and had been treated in Beijing for years.

The government announced Monday that the official mourning period for the King-Father will last for a week from Oct. 17 to 23 with flags flying at half-mast and all entertainment being prohibited.

The King-Father's body will be emplaced at the Royal Palace for at least 3 months for mourners to pay last respects before being cremated.

Sihanouk reigned Cambodia from 1941 to 1955 and again from 1993 until his voluntary abdication on Oct. 7, 2004 in favor of his son, the current King Norodom Sihamoni.

When the Khmer Republic fell to the Khmer Rouge in April 1975, Prince Sihanouk became the symbolic head of state of the new régime while Pol Pot remained in power. Sihanouk, who had imagined living like a retired country gentleman and perhaps being 'a public relations man for [his] country and have [...] jazz parties and do some filming'[8] was to spend the next few years virtually as a hostage of the Khmer Rouge. The next year, on 4 April 1976, the Khmer Rouge forced Sihanouk out of office again and into political retirement. During the Vietnamese invasion, he was sent to New York to speak against Vietnam before The United Nations. After his speech, he sought refuge in China and in North Korea.

What's the problem for China calling him a good friend? Even loads of Cambodians mourn his death. He was a prisoner of Khmer Rouge and you shouldn't mix him up with Pol Pot.

Hu, Wen bid farewell to late Cambodian king

chinadaily.com.cn (18 October 2012 3:13 AM)

BEIJING - Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao bid their final farewells to late Cambodian King Norodom Sihanouk on Wednesday.

During a farewell ceremony held at Beijing Hospital, Hu expressed his "deepest grief" over the death of Sihanouk on behalf of the Chinese government and people, saying Cambodia has lost an outstanding leader, while China has lost a great friend.

Although Sihanouk has passed away, he will live in the two peoples' hearts forever as a symbol of China-Cambodia friendship, Hu said.

Sihanouk's contributions will be recorded in history forever and encourage the two peoples to learn from the past and move on to write a new chapter in bilateral relations, Hu said.

Cambodian Queen-Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk, King Norodom Sihamoni and Prime Minister Hun Sen expressed gratitude for the delicate care given to Sihanouk by China, saying Sihanouk was always committed to pushing bilateral relations forward while treating China as his second home.

They also expressed willingness to carry on Sihanouk's legacy in advancing bilateral cooperation.

Premier Wen, as well as State Councilors Ma Kai, Meng Jianzhu and Dai Bingguo, also attended the ceremony.

Hu presented a wreath at the ceremony, as well as observed a moment of silence and bowed three times in front of Sihanouk's body, upon arriving at the hospital.

Former President Jiang Zemin and members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, including Wu Bangguo, Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang and Zhou Yongkang, also laid wreathes to mourn Sihanouk after he died early Monday morning in Beijing.

Wreathes given by several former Chinese leaders, as well as the CPC Central Committee, the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, the State Council, the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, the Central Military Commission and relevant departments, were also placed at the ceremony.

Later Wednesday morning, Sihanouk's coffin was brought to Cambodia. Dai Bingguo, Norodom Monineath Sihanouk, Norodom Sihamoni and Hun Sen escorted the coffin.

Flags at Xinhuamen, the main entrance of the headquarters of the CPC central committee and the central government, as well as those at the Great Hall of the People, Tian'anmen Square and the Foreign Ministry, flew at half-mast on Wednesday to mourn the death of Sihanouk.

The Chinese Embassy in Cambodia also expressed its condolences by flying its flags at half-mast in accordance with local arrangements.

I am afraid you misunderstand my question.

I guess King Sihanouk was a best friend of China, because he supported the slayer gang Khmer Rouge who attacked Vietnam in the 1970´s. It is just sad for the Cambodia people, he rather cared of his thron than the victims of the genocide.

We do observe China give the highest honor to this late king, the highest ever to a foreign country leader, which clearly showed China is sternly consistent in its foreign policy and its commitment to ally nations. We the US dumped Egypt's Mubarak like he's a hated rathole.

RIP and regards to China.
