That ship has sailed a long time ago. In Taiwan, attitudes have already toughened to the point where peaceful reunification is impossible. Further olive branches from mainland to Taiwan is pointless at this point. So we are at a point where soft power has failed. However, hard power can always find a way to succeed.
Hard power VS soft power
A very strange situation from various interviews and polls is that many Taiwanese choose independence when being asked about their preference about independence or reunification with the mainland China, but when given only two choices: war or reunification, they pick reunification. This is really 不见棺材不掉泪。
