Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al Sisi said Tuesday that Cairo would cooperate with Moscow to see the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Egypt, on the second day of President Vladimir Putin’s official visit to the Arab country.

Egypt and Russia “have signed a memorandum of understanding to build the first nuclear plant in [the northern city of] El-Dabaa,” Sisi said during a news conference.

The Egyptian leader was speaking to journalists at Cairo’s Al Qubba presidential palace, where he was joined by his Russian counterpart, Putin.

During the conference, Sisi also said that Cairo would strengthen its military cooperation with Moscow.

Sisi stressed the importance of a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli problem and preserve the unity of Libya.

Standing next to Sisi, Putin said that he expected there would be a new round of talks to resolve the Syrian conflict after some opposition figures and the Damascus government met in Moscow last month.

“We look forward ... to the next round of such talks, which ultimately I hope will lead to a peaceful settlement of the situation in Syria,” Putin said.

Egypt president: Russia, Egypt to build nuclear power plant | News , Middle East | THE DAILY STAR

Tuesday's announcement by Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi came during a joint press conference in Cairo with visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Sissi also says the two nations signed agreements to improve natural gas business and investment. He says they also agreed to create a Russian industrial zone along the Suez Canal.

Will Egypt purchase gas from Russia instead of Israel?

Any information about when the nuclear plant will be ready and how many that are going to be built?

Interesting development as Jordan also signed a deal with Russia for a similar project.

It seems like the whole region is turning towards nuclear energy. KSA is going to built 16 nuclear plants over the next 15 years with the first scheduled to be ready in 2022. Although the GCC has many other sources to energy than nuclear energy which countries like Jordan and Egypt do not have the luxury of.

@Frogman

Why is Egypt turning towards Russia of late? A coincidence? What are the reasons behind such a move? It's not exactly a trusted country (not saying that the West is) and historically Arab countries that have worked closely with Russians have come to regret it later on.

I don't know what Egypt will do with one nuclear reactor. Try meeting energy needs? I doubt it would fill in. Also if it goes ahead, it still needs about 7 years to be built.

Arab nations should grow a spine and develop nuclear weapons. US can't afford to attack a nation anymore. This is opportunity to develop weapons program. Israel won't be capable of preventing all Arab nations either. If Iran and Israel have nuclear weapons then we must have them too.

We will. KSA and the GCC has openly stated that they will if that happens. Egypt and other Arab countries would then likely follow suit.

Nuclear energy and expertise will be present in most Arab countries in the not so distant future too. It's inevitable.

I'm going to hesitate in taking them seriously though. We need delivery program. There needs to be preparatory work done. Waiting is putting Arabs at disadvantage.

Background on Egypt's nuclear past.

There was never any intention to import Israeli gas. Apart from ludicrous media campaigns the Ministry of Electricity and Energy never mentioned anything regarding such a deal was even on the cards. Gas is being imported from Algeria.

Around 2020 and it will initially have four nuclear reactors.

Generally Elsisi's foreign policy has been more non aligned than the previous regimes. He is working hard to establish deeper ties with the Kremlin and China, and has also been trying to 'win' back the EU, while the United States has been seen to be losing ground in terms of influence in Egypt. The Chinese Premier should be in Egypt some time in the coming months and that will also be great for investment which is something Egypt desperately needs, and it is also something the US is reluctant or unwilling to do.

The deal was a result of a global tender

Four 1200 megawatt reactors, initially. That would fill in the deficit today, which is caused by a lack of fuel (plants only work at 60% of capacity when short on fuel) and plants. Deals for traditional plants, solar plants, clean coal plants, wind plants, and hydroelectric plants have also been penned. The foundation infrastructure for the site itself has already been built, it should be ready in 5-6 years. There is no real short term solution or stop gap for this chronic crisis.

Is it possible by 2020 you will give Gaza full time electricity and in return we export strawberries? :pop:

You thanked an Israelis post. Shame on you. And shame on Al-Sisi. Israelis are clearly standing up for his regime. And Egyptians were never known for that.

the west are dirty backstabbers we were close to a civil war and they were working to make things worse unless they change their policy in the middle east it is hard to trust the US anymore i think our relations with Russia and China will be something different than Syria current relations with Russia a little more balanced

His narrative is Israeli narrative. Even if you believe Egypt should have various ties, doesn't mean you should follow along everything. US has law, it can't support coup with aid. Not because Obama but because US law. Although when Congress chooses to twist around law in favor of Israel they can do so. Especially during Israeli attacks on Gaza.

Now for Egypt, they already amended the bill so they can return back to giving aid this year. I don't support Egyptian coup. However, if he can take necassary steps in Egypt to include all sides in politics. And do reconciliation and have tolerance it would be positive for Egyptian society. Also if there are fair elections where everyone can participate. That is needed for Egypt's stability. And is moral thing to do.

Secondly, me personally, if these steps above are taken. And the Egyptian leadership decides to move away from US/Israel and embrace Russia/China and open border with Gaza I will support that enthusiastically. But your leader has very good relations with Israel at this moment. And that's something unfortunate which Egypt's gains nothing out of. He should end that policy.

this is not about the aid US support to MB and allies during one of the hardest times in Egypt is not a simple thing i see what happens in Syria and think this is what they wanted to happen in my country they are backing down only because it is clear who is the winning side but that doesnt mean they will stop trying or wait for the right moment to stab us in the back again .... democracy and including all sides and all this talk is not the right topic to talk about right now i think first we should ensure our security and fix our economy then i think most problem will be solved in time
about palstine is it is easy if el sisi did like erdogan and talked every while about palstine and we should do this and do that. empty words will not do you any good what Egypt has done and helped to reach a cease fire in gaza the last time this is action not words
