ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan, has unanimously approved a new summery seeking extension in the service of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa for another three years, ARY News reported.

Addressing a press conference following the cabinet meeting, Federal Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood said that Prime Minister Imran Khan has taken the decision in the wake of the ongoing tense situation along the line of control, Indian threats and risk of false flag operation by Indian troops.

In a step to keep consistency in the Army’s command amid current regional situation, PM Imran under Article-243 has suggested the president to extend the service of General Qamar Javed Bajwa as the army chief, he said and clarified that the country’s constitution gave the premier discretionary powers to grant extension in service of the army chief during extraordinary situation.

Lauding the services of General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Shafqat Mahmood said that he played a significant role for the sovereignty and defence of the motherland.

The cabinet meeting added the words ‘extension in term’ in the Army Regulation Act-255 to assist the court, he said and added that the summary has been forwarded to the president for the final approval.

Earlier in the day, Supreme Court (SC) had suspended the notification confirming the extension of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa for another three years.

The SC had adjourned the further hearing of the case till tomorrow and served notices to the COAS, Defence Ministry and Attorney General of Pakistan.

Justice Asif Saeed Khosa had remarked that the Constitution doesn’t allow the prime minister to extend the service of the army chief. “Only the president can extend his service”, he had added.

Tell you what, SCP action is plausible & worthy in these times. What if I say that CJP actually saved a big disaster coming ahead in shape of legal turmoil not just for GoP but also the constitution & military. What I see is different than what others are reacting to. There are legal procedure to endorse certain notifications, issue notifications & then extend someone's services while in this case, as @Mangus Ortus Novem highlighted a bit, actually legal team has acted incompetently and left a wide open lacuna which could have been a blood nose punch under constitution against GoP.

That would had been big big legal mess once noted. Having said that, the issue could had been raised weeks back quietly. It wasn't such a big deal. I can say for me that when I am about to evaluate such kind of situation, I mostly avoid believing into Media so their self styled claims & rants have no value and don't pay attention as what they are up-to especially when it is CJP at receiving end. . . . not to forget the roots & sponsorship of corrupt lot is still in media. Secondly, someone within PTI or the team near to IK, are incompetent to the Core. I mean, this is not the first I said so while PM knows well or at-least became aware. The situation as I see, CJP is actually going to save them IK from a disaster and in-fact taking such action, if there is such kind of lacuna for notifying an extension; is a sudden help to GoP. These are my observations that I have been asking almost everyone to not to jump on the gun before perfect time. Let's just wait till Thursday Night... COAS will complete his tenure & reaching superannuation of service.

I truly hope so... we need stability as PakEconomy is entering a Foundational Stage... next stop inflation control and acceleration of SEZs ...


In broader context there is IoJK and Afghan Peace Deal ... not to foget Launching of Yuan as one of the reserve currency by SBP ... which will give us another breathing space in Forex and PKR-Dollar Parity... thus inflation control and relief to ordinary Paks!

The time is nearing. Economically, there are targets being set for the month of February and team inside PM office does know as why this is necessary.

Furthermore, IK is also being updated about incompetent lot or few people around him along with black sheep. He is noted as "Two Weeks" time for more changes & surprise.

Thirdly, people shouldn't take bureaucracy lightly. These bureaucrats have deep roots filled with lot of corruption and power hunger notion that they wouldn't let it go easily nor will miss any chance to prove their might. This is the most dangerous tumor within system that halts progress and corrupts every development. Why people forgets that Ahad Cheema & couple of more are still with NAB? though they have spilled a lot of things and helping more as the say passes.

Also, if I am not wrong, SBP will show real changes by next January or in the first quarter of 2020 if things went as planned. There are further developments but all of these steps needs a peaceful & favourable environment which was threatened and still opposition is trying to sabotage but I do see more & more grip on the issues by everyday. However, if IK or PTI to say, failed to hold onto issues as such & succumb to corrupt tactics; then there will be a total different picture for the political life of IK which seems a low chance but threat exists.

Unwarranted ruling from SC, unless there is some hidden agenda. And there is always some thing cooking in Pakistan.
....CJ could just called AG in the chambers and should have asked AG to correct any procedural lacuna and that was it. Why he made it a headline? He knows or other people in the corridors.
Having said that, there is still no chance PMIK can try to talk less and focus on governing the country. He is his own enemy. Problem is there is no other better alternative.
