Dhaka, Apr 11 (UNB) – Bangladesh will import another 500 MW of electricity from India as the Cabinet Committee on Public Purchase on Wednesday approved a proposal to this end.

Finance Minister AMA Muhith presided over the meeting attended by some senior ministers who are members of the cabinet body.

Indian company National Thermal Corporation (NTPC) and Power Trading Corporation (PTC) will supply the electricity for 15 years.

However, initially they will supply electricity on a short-term basis for one and half years and then for 13.5 years.

According to the proposal, 300 MW electricity will come from Indian state-owned NTPC at Tk 4.71 per unit (each kilowatt hour) on the short-term basis and Tk 6.48 per unit on the long-term basis while 200 MW from PTC, a public-private company of India, at Tk 4.86 per unit for the short term and Tk 6.94 per unit for the long term.

At present, the government is importing 640 MW of electricity from India at different rates. The rates are being fixed from time to time on the basis of the Indian market rates.

Of this existing 640 MW electricity, 250 MW are coming from Indian government’s eastern grid while 250 MW from private sector and 100 MW from Tripura state and another 40 MW from eastern grid.

The committee also approved a number of proposals, including Dhaka Wasa’s contract award for a wet-field construction, import of 30,000 tonnes of phosphoric acid and riverbank protection.

As per the proposal on the riverbank protection, Bangladesh Navy-owned Dockyard and Engineering Limited will execute a riverbank protection work at the Jamuna River to protect Sadar upazila and mass graveyard and other structures of Fulchhari upazila in Gaibandha district.

The Dockyard and Engineering Limited won the contract at Tk 295.5 crore through direct procurement method (DPM).

The committee also approved another DPM proposal for purchase of 192 double cabin pickup vans for assistant commissioners (land) under the Land Ministry.

State-owned Progati Industries will supply the pickup vans at Tk 96.56 crore.

India's own electricity is enough?
Far from enough not even half way yet.... They need 1500GW... they have around 350GW... Pakistan has 26gw and need 230gw.

.
This is great news. BD needs to make India more dependent on it and then apply the squeeze as and when.

The amount of electricity being imported from India will still be less than the 1.32GW Chinese Payra Coal Power Plant that will come online next year. With a total cut-off of power by India, BD will barely feel the difference.

With a 340-350 gW installed capacity India is almost self-sufficient in power. But, it has not yet been able to provide electricity to all the households because of administrative weakness.

As for India selling power to BD it makes sense for both the parties. Some of the areas in India produces more power than it needs in those areas. So, it makes quite a sense to sell it to BD.

As for BD, I ask all those misguided Chetona group in the PDF, if BD PM is correct in saying that 90% of BD has been connected to the power grid, i ask them why then it is necessary to import extra from India as well as China? The reality is BD needs to install at least 100,000 mW before it can claim sufficiency. So, the govt should install at least 40,000 mW before it can claim near credibility.

An example. Japan, with a 130 million population, has an installed capacity of 250,000 mW. So, can the Shonar Bangla people start singing chorus when its actual production capacity is only less than 10,000 mW against the installed capacity of 16,000 mW? @UKBengali, @Bilal9, @TopCat.

@TopCat, please do not come up with your childish and meaningless CAPTIVE POWER.

being connected is not equal to having enough power.
you need both, enough power and connected to the grid.

. . .
230GW? thats quite a lot
Thats was me being charitable... if they wan't to enjoy western quality of life you need MW higher than your population number.

Western countries that have highest quality of life on the planet usually have mw higher than their population number.... PK,IND,BD have a long way to go.

Not really. In the UK it is about the same.
BD needs about 200GW of generation capacity to be level with the West.
If BD ever catches up with West , it may not be till at least 2060 and so
plenty of time to build this capacity.

UK have pop in 66 Million and 80,000 MW electricity.... fine for the UK... by the time Asian countries they get 200GW the west would have increased it's own power generation. BD pop in 2060 will be well over 200M.

Think BD population will peak at 200 million around 2040 and then start decline.
200GW for BD will suffice I think by the latter part of this century.
